Do you have disaster supplies?

Having our 3rd just really got me thinking......with all the dangers in this world maybe we should be prepared in case of a natural disaster or even something worse? With 3 little lives counting on me I would have to be unprepared.  I know it's recommended to have some emergency supplies, especially water, etc.  Does anyone else have supplies like these set aside?  What do you keep on hand?  I tend to want to go overboard and want things like an all season tent, and some nice hiking backpacks to pack everything in,etc.  For some reason I'm just really getting the urge to get everything we would need.  Am I just being a paranoid freak?

Re: Do you have disaster supplies?

  • We don't, but that's because we live in an area where nothing is likely to happen. The worrier in me always says, "but...", however, we don't really get tornadoes, certainly not hurricanes, not earthquakes, and flooding only rarely.

My parents live on the coast though and had to evacuate for both Hurricane Rita and Ike. During hurricane season they keep water, some canned food, a weather radio, and try to have a surplus of all of their medicines. The evacuations for Rita really scared them--it took them 16 hours on the road to get to my aunt's house, usually an hour away--so they prepare thoroughly.

If you live in a risky area, I'd keep emergency supplies around. It can't hurt, right? I feel like it's the same rationale as to why I have jumper cables, fix-a-flat, duct tape and other emergency supplies in my car. You hope you don't need it, but it sure helps if you do.

  • No we do not have a kit together. WWW.ready.gov is a good resource
  • Not really....and we live in Florida. I've yet to meet a hurricane that was unexpected, so we just head on over to my mom's house in case of any emergency.  Even though she lives an hour away, we usually have ample time to head over there and get ourselves comfortable.  Our apartment is wayyy too small to keep a stockpile of water and food.

  • when I lived in Louisiana, i had an emergency kit, but I was just me, no family..

but here is a list of what i had..

Case of Bottle Water (also having a brita would be fine too)

Lots of Can Food (like soup)

package food that doesn't go bad

Keep important papers in a water proof container ( I lost a lot of papers by not doing this)

    Blankets, extra clothes

    portable camping stove

    cooler

hmm that's all I can think of what I had..

But like a pp said, ready.gov is a good site to use

  • the church I belonged to growing up always counseled us to have a "72 Hour Kit" prepared and ready to go. The theory was that you would have everything you needed for 3 full days in case you lost power, water, etc.and had to wait for help. I think it was more for self-sufficiency in case of an emergency vs. full out survival since most people live in cities now, but it makes sense if something catastrophic were to happen (like Hurricane Katrina) where SO many people need help and it takes a while to get around to everyone.

If you google 72 Hour Kit it looks like it pulls up a ton of lists that you could pull from. I think it's a great idea and I know it's something that I will probably pull together now that we have our house and a LO.

  • We do.  We live in the mountains and get some pretty serious snow storms.  We have water, non-perishable food items, blankets, flashlights & extra batteries, kerosene heater & kerosene, etc.  We also have a small generator.

  • We don't live in an area that gets many natural disasters.  We don't have a kit, but we should have one anyway since we have children that depend on us.

This was our thought process until last year when we were snowed in by a snowstorm and the power was out for 55 hours in the dead of winter.  It was awful. We're better prepared 'just in case' for this year.

  • If you are really interested in 'stocking up' Costco has kits you can buy. Go to costco.com and enter disaster supplies in the search bar and they have tons. There is even the 72 hour family kit that pp mentioned. Also, I have been told by close friends that have done this as well, the Church of Latter Day Saints sells kits as well. Something to look into for sure, we plan on doing so as well! GL to you!

  • We don't and we live on the gulf coast. We always have amble warning for hurricanes and we don't have a lot of room for a stockpile in our apartment. Luckily we have a family farm inland that is stocked with the basics and has a pond filled with fish and a ton of deer. That's where we'll go in a zombie apocalypse.

  • We don't, and we live in Los Angeles! Every time there is an earthquake I think about getting supplies, then I end up forgetting! Perhaps today is the day hehe.

  • I'm not exactly in an area that is known for natural disasters.  I think the last I recall is a relatively strong hurricane when i was in middle school that shatters our living room windows and downed trees.  Nevertheless, I do have stashes of emergency supplies.

Each of our cars has a full first aid kit and warm blanket.

In our condo we have many, many gallons of water and cans of formula (even though I EP, but you never know if you'll be stuck days without power which would render the pump useless and also spoil all the stash I have in the freezer within a couple days.  My DS was never able to latch).  We have lots of healthy non-perishables (fruits, veggies, cereals, etc...), a ton of dipaers and wipes, first aid supplies, vitamins, extra dog food, candles, flashlights with extra batteries...  That may be it I think.  I think it's a pretty good stash.
