Toddlers: 24 Months+

XP: Moms of 2 or More

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of a double stroller with Baby #2 on the way.  We have a Chicco Cortina travel system from DD.  She will be 21 months when the baby is born and she is walking very well.  On one hand, anywhere she would be walking a lot, I would have someone else with me and they could just push her in an umbrella stroller. But I hate to end up somewhere and need a double stroller and not have one.  How much did you use a double stroller and did you think it was worth it to have one?

I know it's early to be worrying about it, but there are great deals out at Christmas so I didn't want to miss a deal being unprepared or miss something on Craigslist.

TIA!

  • I rarely use our double stroller.  IF we go grocery shopping(the 3 of us), I just put both in the cart, or, if I must, I will pull the cart behind me while pushing the single stroller ahead(not ideal, but I've only had to do it twice so far...once because DS#2 was too young to sit up on his own, the other time because the cart only fit one child).  To be honest, I just don't care to do any shopping(clothing or otherwise) with them if I am by myself.  My hubby usually comes along or stays home with the boys.  Maybe I'm the exception though...

  • DD was 26 months when DS was born. I use the double stroller everyday. It's great for places like the zoo, but I also use it for walks, the park, the mall, etc. I have the kids by myself a lot though so if DH was home more maybe it wouldn't get used as much. Not sure, but for us it has been well worth the investment!!
  • I'm not a mom of 2 but I have my nephew (2 yrs) all the time.  My SIL and I have actually talked about going in on a double stroller to share because it's so much easier having them confined together.  I wouldn't want to be stressed about taking the kids out by myself just because of the stroller situation.  If you don't want an actual double stroller, I'd at least get a sit and stand or something similar so both have a place to rest if needed.

  • Ditto pp's. I got a great deal on our sit and stand on craigs list and we use it a lot.  For an infant and a toddler its great and folds up to almost the same size as a regular stroller.

  • I use our double stroller every single day. I have the BJ City Select and I love it! It was worth every penny. We use it to walk the dog, do groceries (there is a huge storage area on the stroller), quick errands..everything! Owen is a big baby and carrying him around in the car seat carrier is not an option for me! The best part about my stroller is that you can make it a double or a single very easily, so depending on where you are going and who is with you, you just fit it to whatever you need!

  • My #2 isn't here yet, but I have a Joovy Caboose sit and stand. I also got a BOB double stroller for walks, zoo, etc.

  • I can't live without my double.  I have the city select too.  I got the infant seat adapter so my chicco works with it.  Ditto the pp about being a single or double.  Really nice feature.  I like that DS can get in and out as he wants if we are at the zoo or something like that.

DS didn't really like the stroller till DS2 came around.  Once he was born DS1 wanted to do whatever 2 did including being in the stroller.

  • My tot walks everywhere b/c no way in hell I was doing a triple.  I hear the sit and stands are nice if you do the double stroller thing.

  • We decided against buying a double stroller until we were sure we'd need one.  We generally are both around when we go out anywhere with DD so could use two different strollers if needed.  Plus, our DD wants to walk all the time anyway.  My sister has a double and told me she didn't like to use hers because it was super heavy and she had trouble fitting it through doorways and aisles when shopping (hers was side by side).  So we are holding off for now;  if we run into a situation where we think we need one, we'll invest then.

Thank you for answering my question. Lily hates being in a stroller right now, so I've not been sure about buying a double -- will she even get in it? But I have a feeling she will be exactly like your #1 and will want to do everything #2 does. Both good and bad!

  • I use our kolcraft contour every day on walks and love it!

  • my girls are 21 months apart & we have used our stroller a ton of times. We have an umbrella too for short trips. I would get a double for sure. You can always resell it after.

  • Jude haetd the double until Noel arrived... we got a new stroller so I guess it was exciting?  We have the Phil & Ted's Dash with doubles kit.  Right now, I wear Noel and use the stroller as a single.. I loev that it can be both!

    They are 30 months apart.

  • I've been pretty anti-stroller since day one.  I just don't like my kid/s being so passive.  But, when you need one, you need one.  When travelling, or going to amusement parks, fall fairs, etc. I am so glad I have my Phil and Ted Sport.  It is amazing.  I bought it  used.  It has travelled to Florida several times, been to Disney, Sea World, etc., I took my 2 kids to Arizona by myself (inconceivable without the stroller, honestly as the travel days were 14+hours).

    Phil and Teds.  Love it.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I still haven't bought one.  I'm considering getting the Joovy Caboose Sit and Stand.  But at this point, I haven't needed a double stroller.

So it's on the back burner for me.

  • I also think it depends on where you live and what time of year the new baby comes. If i would have had a winter baby I might not have thought about a double as much.  Since DS2 was born in the spring I used mine all the time for parks, zoo, fairs, walks and shopping.  in the winter we don't have as many outings.  DS1 is also going through a rough terrible two patch.  Keeping him contained sometimes is a must.  DS2 is huge.  I can't carry or wear him all the time because he is so heavy.

  • We use our double stroller constantly for neighborhood walks, family outings, etc. DS#1 is certainly capable of walking but sometimes he doesn't want to. I hate pushing the unbrella stroller as it's not comforatble bending over slightly to reach the handles and it would be one more thing we had to pack. We actually tried using just our single stroller when we went pumpkin picking and wished we had brought the double by the end of the day. The umbrella stroller would have been a PITA to push around the farm.
  • DD1 was 27 mos when DD2 was born.  DD2 was 33 mos when DS2 was born.  I used our double strollers a LOT!  We did the zoo weekly in the summer, the museums almost weekly in the winter & shopped regularly (without DH).  I had the DuoGlider with #2 & #3 and was not crazy about it.  For #3 & #4 I got the Sit N Stand LX and LOVED it!  There were many times that I had all 3 young kids on that thing.  Definitely a must!

  • I didn't buy one at first because I wear the LO a lot.  But a few months ago, I got fed up and bought a sit 'n stand.  Highly recommend that because it works so well for the older kids.
