Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

STTN question

DD goes to bed around 7pm, and on a good night (when she isn't sick or teething), she sleeps until 5am. (and then wakes up like clockworK)  I always nurse her because if I don't then she won't go back to sleep.  But, I've been told that she really doesn't need this feeding and that she is waking out of habit.  I would LOVE for DD to sleep from 7-7pm.  Is that reasonable of a 13 month old?

Suggestions on how to get rid of that 5am wake up?

Re: STTN question

  • DS sleeps 8pm-7am. He was sleeping 12 hours but now, not so much. At 12 months we moved his bedtime up to 8. Could you try that?

Maybe.. though when we've been busy or out and about for whatever reason and she goes to bed later (sometimes as late as 9pm), she still wakes up at 5am.  Maybe if it was a consistent move to 8pm that might work, but then we'd have to rearrange her whole day routine. hmmm....

  • Personally, I wouldn't move the bedtime to 8. Keep it to 7, or maaaybe 7:30 pm, but not later.

  • DS sleeps 7-7, around 13 months he was sleeping 7-9 whoo hoo!! I'd suggest from now on going in there, giving him his binky, blankie and using the seahorse if you have one...or any mobile type toy. Don't talk to him or make eye contact. Once he figures out that he isn't going to get anything from you, he should stop waking up.

  • Is your DD just "chatting" and making noise or crying and upset. If DS is just awake and making noise we just let him chat and don't go in his room. Typically after a half hour or so of chatting he falls asleep. This morning he was awak chatting at 430-5am. I never start his day before 6am. So we just let him chat and he slept until 8.

  • I could've written your post, and just the past two days I've been trying to phase it out too.  My pedi said that although he is truly hungry at that point (which is why I'd give in), it's hunger from habit, if that makes sense.  The pedi gave the analogy that when he worked graveyard he'd eat a big meal when he got home around 1AM and then after he stopped that shift, he would wake up hungry at 1AM.  He said to give him less and less milk at the feeding and soon he won't need it.  So maybe if you nurse him you could do it for less time?  So far it hasn't worked out for us--he only went back to sleep for like 30 minutes and then was up again, hungry.  We're gonna keep trying though.  GL!
  • At 14m, we (begrudgingly) began a modified Ferber-ish CIO method to get DD to stop waking up at 4am. It worked for us.

You're right - she probably doesn't need that feeding at 13m, especially if she's gaining weight well.

We had no luck pushing bedtime back - she still woke up at the same time regardless. She now sleeps 7-6:30am every night.

  • IMO, she may not need more than 10 hours of sleep.  I could be wrong, but I don't think EVERY baby sleeps for 12 hours straight.

My DS sleeps from 8:15 pm until 6:30 am most nights. So he's averaging 10 hours. Sleeping in, is until 7 am or so. He's only slept more than 11 hours once.

When I add his naps to the mix, DS gets around 13 hours of sleep per day?which falls into the range for his age (14 months).

Edited to add: Ideally, I'd like to put him down for the night closer to 7:30, but with work schedules it doesn't always work. On nights we do put him in his crib by 7:30, he tends to wake up around 6 am. It's like his internal clock wakes him after he's been asleep for 10.5 hours.
