We were at a party and I was talking to the wife of one of DH's coworkers. We're not friends, but we do talk at work functions. She got her teaching credential in college, but never got a job. She now has 3 kids and she is a SAHM. What really bugged me is that she kept telling other people while making small talk(what do you do, etc) that she's a teacher. Now, I'm a teacher and I was kind of offended that she was calling herself a teacher. She's not a teacher, she's a SAHM! Nothing against SAHMs, but it just pissed me off when she is basically taking credit for all the work teachers do without actually doing any of it.
Re: FFFC(for the teachers)NBR
Our family blog
I chose to stay at home and quit teaching while DD is little. That being said...when someone asks what I do for a profession I will tell them I am a teacher. I worked my a$$ off to become one and just because I am choosing to stay home for a year or two doesn't mean I am all of the sudden not a teacher.
It is like my friend who got laid off. He is a lawyer. When someone asks what he does - he doesn't say nothing he says he is a lawyer.
I get why she would do it if she actually taught before... but you said she never got a job - so that would bug me too.
I have a degree in marketing but I've never worked in marketing and would never say I work in marketing, even though that is what is written on my diploma.
Whoops! Now that DD is finally asleep - I was able to reread this without a baby crawling all over me! You are right, that would kind of rub me the wrong way. Still tho - she did graduate and she is certified. I guess I can see both sides now that I reread the post.
You have got to be kidding me! People really refer to themselves as "teachers" that work in a daycare?
I know they have lead teacher positions at daycares, but outside of daycare he/she should not be allowed to refer to themseleves as a teacher!
Yeah, if she were like you(quit teaching to SAH), I would totally understand why she would tell people she's a teacher. But if you've never had your own classroom, never been responsible for 20-30 kids, never dealt with grades, testing, parents, etc.............sorry, I don't think you can call yourself a teacher. You are certified, I agree with that, but I think that's misleading to go around telling people you're a teacher.
I agree, if you SAHM, own it! It's a tough job that's not for everybody, it's something to be proud of!
Agreed.
If it were a more private setting, I would have called her out, like saying "Oh that's great, what school are you at?"
The ladies at DS daycare work their arses off and they could call themselves gods and I wouldn't care.
