with them after the c/s? Just curious how common it is. DS was whisked away after a brief showing and I plan on avoiding that at all costs again (even if I do end up with a c/s). If you did get to spend one-on-one time with your LO either in the OR or recovery room, was it something you specifically mentioned in your birth plan, or was it something that your hospital did normally?
Thanks!
(and I have and will talk to my doctor about it for this time - she says it will depend on the OB who ends up doing the c/s if that's how it goes, but that it does happen at our hosp. Fortunately, assuming my pedi is there, she'll also be supportive of it provided all is well with baby.)
Re: s/o PIP's - how many gals got to hold/keep their LO's
Hi, After my CS w/ DS, he was in my arms w/in 10 minutes which was just long enough for him to get weighed/swaddled,shots/eye medicine etc.. Then after they were finished w/ me, they took him to the nursery. I went to recovery and w/in 10 minutes again, he was there for me to hold and nurse. He was born at 809am and either just before or just after 9am I was nursing him... However they took him to the nursery after that to transport me to my room and then brought him again w/in 20 minutes of us being settled in our room.. I think it all depends on how the baby is doing and what the baby needs done.
Some CSXN babies require more intense suctioning and therefore may be wisked away.. When a baby is born vaginally, it gets a lot of the mucous squeezed out of it when it passes the birth canal.. When you have a csxn-they can be more mucousy/congested and require deeper suctioning..
Good Luck!

My IF blog
They cleaned him up pretty quickly and my DH got to hold him for a while until I was ready to go in to recovery. Then I was able to hold him, only that didn't go so well- I was really drugged up and apparently the epi had washed up into my arms so I didn't have a whole lot of feeling. DH just propped DS up in my arm. I don't really remember much of anything after that- except that the stupid nurse was eating a freaking sandwich and I was starving! I hadn't eaten anything in over 24 hours at that point.
This is the first pic where DS and I are both in it....this is right before I held him for the first time. As you can see, I was in recovery. His radiant warmer was about a foot or two to the right of DH, and I remember opening my eyes for the first time (they gave me valium) and seeing DH videoing the first bath - so I went back to sleep!
The only time he was taken out of recovery was when he went for blood work in the nursery, but they brought him back to me to nurse when his blood sugar was low. I was still in recovery when that happened. I couldn't hold him myself because I was so tired, but the nurse held him to me while he (crappily) latched.
I did. I never went to recovery; they just handed DS to me and wheeled us back to our room.
ETA: DH got to hold him first... while they stitched me up and stuff. I think this was all normal hospital procedure.
I didn't get to hold DD until she was over 2 hrs old
I went into labor naturally, progressed fine, and at 4 cm dilated, they checked me and found that she was unexpectedly breech. They gave me medication to stop my contractions, but it didn't work, so they gave me a second dose, which also didn't work. I was still contracting when they wheeled me into the OR. Apparently I didn't react well to the medication (or at least the double dose of it) because I had all sorts of problems post-op. My body temp was really low, and I was shaking so hard that I bit almost through my tongue. They had to put me in this thing that's like a huge sleeping bag that zips around your neck, and they blow warm air over your body to warm you up. Once I stopped shaking, they hooked me up to some extra medications (also due to the contraction-stopper, I was so out of it at this point though that I don't remember the specifics). They finally wheeled me up to recovery between 2-3 hours after delivery and I finally was able to hold her. DH stayed with her for most of the time.
Nursed without dairy, egg, soy, peanut, treenut, fish, shellfish or beef for over a year.
Currently tandem nursing dairy, egg, and shellfish free.
DS born via emergency c/s after 20 hrs of labor. DD successful VBAC!

If not for my epidural not taking effect, I would have been allowed to keep her with me during closing up and recovery (her apgars were 8 and 9). However, I was in such an unimaginable amount of pain from feeling the c/s. So I requested to be knocked out as soon as DH had her out of the OR.
I've been assured that I will not have issues with pain meds if a c/s is warranted this time (I'm at a different hospital with midwives this time).

DH held DS while they stitched me up, so I got to see him then. They also brought him with me into the recovery room where I was able to nurse him for the 1st time. He stayed in there for a little bit, then had to go to the NICU for monitoring. (I had GD and it's standard procedure at my hospital for that)
I did not specifically request it this way, but my hospital is BIG on BF and rooming in, and try to keep you together as much as possible!
In fact- this is how we were wheeled out of the OR- they didn't have a bassinet for DS! LOL!

They literally pulled DD out, wrapped her in a towel and gave her to DH to hold. Then DH gave her to me for a few minutes while they stitched me up. They then asked DH to take her over to the side of the room while they weighed her and did a few other things. He held her the whole time and carried her to recovery. She never left us and DH gave her to me to nurse as soon as we were in recovery.
I actually had a great c/s experience but would still love to have a VBAC next time around.

Not me
There was meuconium plus he was already in distress so the NICU team there and took him right away. I saw his face for a few moments before he left the room.
DH went with him and I stayed in the OR with my mother while they searched for a missing surgical needle that was unaccounted for... after prepping radiology to search for it, some random nurse walked in and found it on the floor. Disaster averted and I was reunited with my DS an hour after he was born but couldn't hold him more than a few mins at a time cause he needed the warmers to keep his temp up. It seemed like forever.
