BFing with Tongue Tie?

My DD is tongue tied. In the hospital and after we left she was seen by 3 different pediatricians (from the same practice). All of them said that it shouldn't cause any BFing problems. I have met with a few LCs and they told me she had a good latch, but my nipples are often very sore and it doesn't seem like DD can latch very deeply. I often notice that my nipple is lipstick shaped after nursing and I know that isn't normal. I hear her drinking so I know she's managing to get enough milk. I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion about the tongue-tie. Has anyone successfully nursed a tongue tied baby? What did you do that helped?

Re: BFing with Tongue Tie?

  • I don't have alot of information, since my DD was recently diagnosed with it. We noticed a problem when she would always click while nursing on the breast and bottle. She is also dealing with failure to thrive. We were referred out to Dr. Kotlow in Albany NY who specialized in tongued babies and nursing. His website has some good information if you are interested. We have an appointment with him next week to hopefully get it taken care off.

  • My little guy is tongue tied and it seems to be working so far for us. The two pediatricians we've seen have both recommended to not worry about it since he is gaining weight and eating well.
