I have lots of very generous people in my family, all of whom would like to purchase a "big ticket item". I tried suggesting putting money into a savings account/college fund for the LO, but they all looked at me like I had two heads. I also don't think they want to do the "lots of little things" thing (they are also very snobby and care about the appearance of spending good money).
So what are necessary big ticket items? Furniture, stroller, and a car seat are all I could come up with.
Any other ideas would be appreciated!

baby monitor, pack and play, and convertible car seat have all been put on the official "grandparents" list.
Thanks guys!
WhyTF does a baby need a flat screen tv? LOL!
Duh, to watch baby einstein videos.
Do it keep it in your room and tell the ILs you're co sleepers so you share everything with the baby, bed, tv whatever
Is it bad that I have thought about how nice it would be to have a tv and tivo in the baby's room for when I am in there in the glider for long stretches. I am not big on silence and while I will love looking at my baby, I have a feeling that if I am in there for hours I might get a little bored. I probably won't do it, but I have thought about it.
After two losses, third time was a charm.

Book light! I got SO MUCH reading done while nursing my babies. My book counts were unreal thanks to all those late night feedings. The light was enough for me to read but not enough to wake them up - they could basically dream feed and not be disturbed or be distracted by the light like they would if I watched TV. We all went back to sleep more easily.
this - our big ticket items are the car seat, crib, mattress, breastpump, high chair, video monitor, carrier - if you care CDing then, they could get a package of diapers
FABULOUS idea!!
Wow, that is really interesting! I imagine my in-laws are going to do something very generous as well, but probably would give me a sideways glance if I let the baby watch TV! How funny!
Haha, this sounds just like my inlaws. They have this need for everyone to see how much money they spend. Last time they insisted they only wanted to buy us "big ticket" items but never actually followed through and ended up just putting $ into a college savings account which we originally suggested anyway.
I'd say definitely furniture, glider/ottoman, stroller and car seat. Also one of the things I REALLY wanted to do with DS when he was a newborn was get professional pictures but at the time didn't have the $$ to spend on it. Maybe someone can give you that as a gift?
