Should I be taking DHA?

So I was reading the earlier post of DHA.  I take the target brand prenatal, but nothing else.  Should I also be taking a DHA supplement?  I guess the doctor will tell me next week.

Re: Should I be taking DHA?

  • when I asked mine, he said it really doesn't do anything until the 2nd tri. I'll start taking one then.

  • My doctor has me on the One a Day prenatals and those have a separate DHA supplement along with the prenatal vitamin. I'm sure it can't hurt to start taking one.
  • i actually do take one, part of the Once A Day Prenatal vitamin pack.  But to be honest, I just take it because I felt like I should. I have not had my first apointment yet, and I know that my doctor plans on prescribing me over the counter pre natal vitamins.  Maybe you really dont need it till 2nd tri.
  • I actually asked my doctor about it today. She said that you don't have to start taking it until 12 weeks but that there's nothing wrong with starting earlier.

  • Mine says take 200mg a day.  If it's already in your PNV great, if not, take a supplement.

  • This may be a silly question, but what is DHA?

It has to do with brain development.  Probably other stuff, too.

I just take the Target combo-pack.  It has the PNV and a separate DHA.

  • My doctor also said it's not necessary to take until 12 weeks. ?Plus since I have m/s and have strong aversions to fish, she thought i'd end up throwing it up anyway. ?DHA is fish oil.

CVS has a plant based DHA supplement which doesn't have any fish oil (similar to Expecta but MUCH cheaper).  I throw up the fish based ones too!
