Baby Names

Emerson rant

WHY do people think that Emerson is a girls name?!?!?! This makes me so sad, it is our favorite boy name, and I keep having people tell me they only know girls with this name, or saying "I thought that was a girl's name?" This morning on the radio, they were interviewing a woman who just named her baby Emerson Anne- stop ruining our boy name! :(

Any boy name suggestions that are similar to Emerson? I am seriously annoyed about this.

  • Regardless of the 'son' ending, I am one of those ones that see it as a girls name.  I actually don't know anyone with the name but for some reason it's feminine sounding to me.

Emmett is similar to Emerson.  Or maybe Elliott but that is another name that many are naming their daughters.

I am one who has no problem with what another wants to name THEIR child.  I say if you love Emerson, you should use it!

  • Maybe because Teri Hatcher named her daughter Emerson?

That's what I think of when I hear that name.

  • Personally I think it shouldn't be a first name at all.  But yes, I've seen it more often for girls than boys.  I don't understand that trend at all.

  • It all comes down to the NN. Names that can be NN'ed Emma, Emmy, Ella, Ellie are HUGE right now for girls. Emerson is just another one that got caught in the mix.

If I were you, for my own piece of mind, I'd stay away from boys names that have that beginning. Emmett is probably the most masculine of those choices, but I wouldn't be surprised to meet a baby girl named Emmett with the popularity of this trend.

    Just my two cents.

This. It's a last name IMO and doesn't make a great fn. Especially if it's not a family name.

I don't see the appeal of using some random surname that doens't have any meaning or signifigance behind it. Unless it's a family name or you are a huge Ralph Waldo Emerson fan it's kind of an odd choice IMO.

That being said, I think it's a gender neutral name because despite it ending in "son" I really would not know if it was a boy or a girl based on the name alone. I've seen people use it for both sexes.

I'm guessing people like it for girls because of the "Em" part being similar to Emma or Emily.

  • Anything that ends in -son should, logically, be a boys name. Unfortunately logic does not apply these days to babies names, and it is so irritating that this boys name for girls is so popular. It is definitely a pet peeve of many on this board!

You're so right, b/c as much as we love this name, I am afraid it will be too easy to start calling him "Emmy" which is most definitely a girl nn. Em nn's are very popular for girls right now... it is just so frustrating that it causes ppl to stray into boy's names.

Also, I like the Everett suggestion- but then we get into the "Ev" nn's, which all sound girly as well!! Ugh, I can't win.

    I agree.

  • Oh, I know exactly what you mean...all these girl namers say "oh this boy name is so cute on a girl" and then it becomes girl or unisex. Emerson is a boys name - "son of Emery". Some namers are trying to do the same with my number two boys name, Elliott. Clearly they don't undestand how tough it is to name a boy.

And yes, all names that end with -son. I HATE Madison. I'll let Alison/Allison go, since it's been used for girls for so long. Everything else? Boy. I'm not a fan of last names as first names, though.

I had to shoot down DH's suggestion of Elliott the other day, soley for that reason. I think there are going to be a lot of girls with this name.

Elliott was/is our number two choice as well!!! But it's being used for girls so often now that even DH knew about this trend and said he wasn't sure about it. I think we may have to go back to the drawing board completely though. Well, after we find out the gender on the 17th. :) Then I'll worry more about it!

I think it's more prevelant on the name boards than it is in real life. There are many boy namers who will consider this name and don't need feedback. It's the girl namers who aren't sure if they should that we see often. I'm still using Elliott, should we have a second boy, and to hell with the mini trend.

That's a good point, but I think (haven't checked) that "Scrubs" is probably doing more long-term damage to this name as a boy's name than if it wasn't the name of a female character on a popular TV show.

I'd rather just use a name I know my son won't potentially have to share with a little girl in his class, like Charles, Dominic, or Henry.

But watch those become girl's names, now that I've said 'em...

Yeah, I forgot about that show. I'd seriously like to smack the writer who thought that up.

And dude, Henry is totally a girls name - see the word, hen? Stick out tongue I kid, I kid. Lurkers, don't you dare do anything with that.

  • I have a unisex name, I don't care.  Is it really that big of a deal?  I don't think the boy Shannons that I have met ever really cared either.

If you love it, use it.

  • I just posted about this name.  I should have read this post first. :)  I agree with PP though -- if you love it, use it!

It's maybe a bad time in pop culture to name a boy Emmett. All I would ever be able to think of was "Why did you name your kid after a Twilight character?"

  • That sucks your fav name is ruined!

But it's true, I know 3 little girls under the age of 4 named Emerson. Dont know any boys.

Same goes with the name Avery.

    Females have taken them over!
