when/how did you begin to introduce milk? did you wait until 1 year exactly or start earlier? i'm not sure about the downside to starting earlier b/c i always heard one year. is it for the nutrients that they should stick to formula for 1 year? my mom thinks i should start her with milk now since she is eating such a wide variety of fruits and vegetable and meats everyday, but i'm not sure yet.
Re: introducing milk?
I think the downside is whether or not they can handle it, digestively.
We've started putting milk on cheerios for K, and she's had ice cream and yogurt with no issues. So, I don't think she'll have a problem with it taste wise.
I think as long as you use whole milk, you'd be fine. We plan on making the switch around 9 months during the day, and just do formula at night. Then at 10-11 months, switching her over completely.
My doc didn't want us to do any milk until she was into her 11th month. She said that they need that nutrition at least until that time. We started mixing milk with formula at about 11.5 months and then switched her completely a few days before her 1st birthday.
IMO-anything before 10.5 months is way too young if it is used as a replacement for BM or formula.
1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

Our pedi said not to make the switch until 12 months. We went ahead two weeks ago (at 11.5 months) and let him taste my milk (2%). He loved the taste so I poured him a sippy full of whole milk and he took it with no problems. We are doing full whole milk 99% of the time and then one bottle has a tiny bit of formula/milk mix so we can finish our last can.
I say give it to them straight when you are ready to make the transition to see how it goes first before worrying about mixing.
We introduced whole milk at 11 months. My doc wanted me to be done BF sooner rather than later because of the pre-term labor I had with DD. I talked to DD's pedi about it and he said there isn't anything magical about turning a year and suddenly milk being fine.
I started off giving her 4 oz with lunch, just to see if she liked it and could digest it. We had no problems, so I replaced her afternoon nursing session with 6 oz of milk. A week later, I replaced her evening session with milk. I continued to nurse her in the morning until her first birthday.
