taking baby places during cold/flu season

do you think it is safe to take Asha out to places during cold/flu/rsv season? she was born at 38 wks but spent a week in the nicu cause she had lung maturity issues and needed a dose of surfactant....she's now 12 wks

i'm talking about places like costco/walmart/bru etc....i try to avoid crowded times and she stays in her stroller - i don't allow anyone to touch her or get close....i usually go to target/walmart at off times but costco tends to get crowded on the weekends....

Re: taking baby places during cold/flu season

  • If she was 38 weeks with no problems I would say it's fine but her lung maturity issues give me pause.  I think as long as she isnt being touched or sneezed on it is probably ok.  You should probably take extra precautions though, shopping carts are full of germs so carry around some lysol wipes and hand sanitizer and make sure you use it before touching her (replacing a binki or putting her in the car).  Talk to her pedi about it too.

  • Both of my DS were full-term with no lung issues, so my answer may not apply to you.  When I spoke with my pedi she said she feels more comfortable with infants being out in public areas (stores etc.) where no one touching them rather than being at a family function where people are passing them around.  I took my boys out fairly early, but obviously avoided peak times!  The malls on the weekend, not happening.

  • You should be fine since she is 3 months (right?)! My kids were all november babies and I took them out in the winter just didn't let people touch them. The twins were born 36 weeks and 4 days and Brady was 37 weeks!

  • DD was born at the end of June (at a little over 38 weeks, but no lung issues) and we took her out everywhere during cold/flu season. I kept her in her infant carrier and used lots of hand sanitizer/lysol wipes. She was in daycare 2 days/week from 4 months on, so I figured she was getting plenty of exposure to germs there anyway. And she didn't actually got her first real illness until closer to a year old (beyond just a runny nose/slight cold).
