Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do you supplement your BF baby?

Well DD is 4 1/2 mo and I've been EBF.I make good amounts of milk 4-5 oz a pumping session on my days at work but she's starting to eat 6oz at a time so my freezer stash in now gone. Usually only get 2 pumping sessions in at work in 12 hours (it's just to busy)  I have to supplement, I've been pumping exactly enough for her next day of daycare but I know at some point it's not gonna be enough. Do you have your LO caregiver give all the BM and then the formula or do you alternate BM and formula bottles all day. I guess it probably doesn't matter but just wondering what other moms are doing? She will still be EBF when 4 days a week when I'm off work.

  • I EP, so if there's BM in the house, he gets that. If I'm having a low supply day, he gets formula.

  • Have you tried adding in a pumping session at night and on weekends? That might give you enough to cover low ouput days.
  • I would add in extra pumping sessions on the days I do not work.  Also, why do you think she needs more ounces in her bottles?  Breastfed babies typicially do not need to increase ounces as they get older/bigger.  Your milk changes to meet their needs.  It's possible your childcare provider "thinks" she needs more because she is wanting to suck.

  • She is eating 6 oz for my husband after he picks her up in the evening. At daycare the most they have given her is 5 oz. It could just be that my husband is overfeeding her I guess. He says she gets made when he takes the bottle away so he gives her 2 more ounces. She doesn't spit them up so I was assuming she needed them. On my days off I have a pumping session at 10 am when she is napping. I'm gonna keep trying to EBF I really want too. I also try to pump before bed but sometimes that's only 30 min after she's eaten and I only get an ounce or two.  She isn't sleeping thru the night yet I feed her once at night so pumping in the middle of the night isn't really an option for me.
  • I give BM during the day and Formula at night.

  • i only pump about 15 oz a day, baby eats about 20.

My daycare makes 4 5-oz bottles every morning.  she gets as much milk as i pumped the day before and the rest in formula.  sometimes i do all milk in three bottles and all formula in the other, sometimes we mix it in.  DD doesnt seem to notice either way.

  • OK well DS is a hog then-

He will be 5 months next week and eats 6 to 7 ounces every 2 to 2 1/2 hours! Ahhhh!

Luckily I pump at least that much per session but does this mean he's an oinker?

Oh and my plan (if my supply tanks) is to give BM for daycare or at grandma's house and do formula at home....FWIW, I started Silas on oat cereal two times per day too and that is a bit of a help as well.
