Cloth Diapering

Need some help with smell.

Whenever my son pees, it smells really strong. Unbearable, almost like cat pee. Or a litter box. I really don't understand it lol. I took him to the doctor this morning, that's how bad it was. (No UTI, that's what I thought.)

I just switched over to cloth yesterday, and every diaper I've put him it smells like this.

I washed the diapers and if you sniff the inserts (I'm using pockets right now), you can still kind of smell it (not unbearable, but still a little bit there).

What can I do? Is he always going to smell like this? Anything else I can do to get the smell OUT afterwards?

Right now I ...

Cold wash, no detergent.
Hot wash, 3 Tbsps of Rockin Green
Then an extra cold rinse.

Andd.... go.

Re: Need some help with smell.

  • How many diapers do you have in the load?  How much water are you using?  You shouldn't have your washer more than 2/3 of the way full with diapers (I personally think it's better not to fill it more than halfway) and you should be using the highest water level possible.  If not, there won't be enough water to get the diapers really clean.

If that's not the issue, you may need more detergent.

  • Ditto previous poster about the water levels.  Also you can add a cup of vinegar, it's supposed to break down uric acid and help with odors.  You're supposed to add it to the rinse cycle, when your washer would normally dispense fabric softner.  You can pour it in there if you have a special spout, if not then use a downey ball with vinegar.  Is he taking in enough fluids?  That could also be the cause??
