A Halloween/Doorbell question

I'm not taking Aubrey out trick or treating since she is still so young...so that means staying home to pass out candy.  Something that didn't occur to me until tonight was the doorbell.  Aubrey goes to bed at 7pm at the latest (the last couple of nights she's been falling asleep by 6:30 before I even get her to bed)...how do I keep people from ringing the doorbell and knocking instead?

I had thought about putting a sign on the front door, but my mom had a point in that kids don't pay attention to stuff like that.  The only other thing I can think of is to duct tape my doorbell so that it won't ring and they'd have to knock.  I just don't want the doorbell waking her up with it ringing every few minutes.  Any ideas?

Re: A Halloween/Doorbell question

  • Do you have a storm door? We keep our front door open with the storm door closed on halloween because there is no point of closing the door with so many trick or treaters.

With the front door open, they usually just knock on the storm door.

  • Oh yes we do have a storm door!  Yay thanks for that idea Lydia.  I'll try it out :)
  • Turn out the lights so that it looks like no one is home, which is what we did the 1st year.  DD slept and DH and I watched scary movies in the bedroom.
  • We're going to put a bowl of candy on the front porch wht a note asking people to only take one.  That way they won't ring the doorbell or knock {both of which make our little dog bark}.
  • I would do the storm door thing, but also tape the bell. Some LOs just love to ring the bell and will do so even if your standing at the door.
