Baby Monitors and radiation

Not a whole lot of info here but just something to think about.  Scroll down to the part about baby monitors.  (I am not on this board very often these days so I apologize if this has already been posted!!)

Re: Baby Monitors and radiation

  • One of the big things we were told after Teagan was diagnosed was to unplug all electrical devices in his room (we did except for the air purifier) and that he should never hold a cell phone or blue tooth device up to his ears.  There are a lot of just every day things we have had to change to protect his brain but those two apply to this post.  It's one of those "can't hurt to change it" things for us =)

My understanding is that this is only for monitors that use DECT (i.e., digital) but I could be wrong.

    YIKES.

How do you know if your monitor is digital?

  • Well, that's pretty suckycrappy. Our house has all four of those.

    Ugh.

    Dear Bump: You suck.

If you're monitor has a freq range and channel selection switches it's probably analog.  For example we have the Sony baby call - 900MHz, which is analog.

Thanks for posting this, scary indeed!

Before anyone freaks their freak, you might check out the USEPA's website on everyday radiation exposure.  I am not in anyway saying that household radation is "safe enough" for everyone, I just want to point out that there are legitimate sources and alarmist sources on all kinds of environmental issues.  Aside from having hypersensitive individuals in your household (e.g., carlinlp) you're likely putting your life at a much higher risk just getting into your car to drive somewhere.

  • Ok, so while I agree with you 100% I do feel the need to take this one step further and point out that as babies and toddlers we know very, very little about our child's future health and or risks.  While we all like to live in denial and think those things only happy to other families, children can be and are diagnosed with a wide range of problems at every age.  Parents have no way of knowing if their child will develop cancer or autism or SPD or a demyelination disorder or ADHD or asthma or allergies or or or later in life.  Do you think that parents of autistic children wish they had started high quality vitamins sooner?  Or an organic diet?  By reducing any number of 'possible' risks earlier in life you very well could be helping your child long term.  And if it is an "easy fix" like changing out a monirtor....then why not?  We take a "if it can't hurt and it might help, why not" approach to things now.

Being on the other side of hindsight, I have thought many days about what would have happened if Teagan consumed less sugar, less corn syrup, had less inflammation in his body, didn't take so many steriods, wasn't exposed to so many chemicals and pesticides, the list goes on and on and on.  Would any one of those things made a difference all alone?  Who knows.  But would a better, greener, organic, less toxic way of life earlier on have made an accumulative difference in his ability to flush his body of too much of anything (vaccines or otherwise)?  He did not have the ability to properly methylate.  Why?  It just makes me ask, are the environmental influences the cart or the horse?

  • I've looked at both the monitors we have online and I still can't tell if they are digital or not.  I'm not freaking out about it, it just got me wondering.  Grrrr....

If you(the collective you) want to...

    ....take the monitor out...

...go Office Space on your microwave...

    ....eat only organic...

    ...use only natural pesticides...

...more power to ya.  I think it's awesome that you (carlinlp family) are finding ways to make your family the best it can possibly be. I'm definitely happy that T is thriving again.  Everyone is making decisions based on what they know.  I work in the environmental field and I deal with toxicity issues on a regular basis.  I certainly don't live in denial (not saying you were referring to me, because I know you were referring to the collective).  All I'm saying is, for me, it's important to look at the source of my information.  If I feel the source of my information is legitimate, I feel pretty good about it. KWIM?

ETA: Oh, and I'm about to head outta here, not bailing on the convo.  I think this is a good post.

Thanks for posting this!  You said it better than I could. :)

  • I absolutely agree that sources of information are SO important.  DH and I have this conversation daily.

I think my point is that there are many things we could have done before he got sick that would have helped him.  Many, many SIMPLE things.  Jon is a great example of what I mean actually....he was healthy, worked out, ate right and made good choices before he found out he was diagnosed with cancer and that enabled him to be better able to kick cancer in the a$$.  Our daily decisions do make a difference in our long term health and I this this is especially true for babies and small children who are still developing and growing.  It is important to also remember that many studies are not done on children, they are done on animals or adults (for obvious reasons) and that what a child absorbs from say, pesticides, is pound for pound more harmful because of their size.  I know "you" know this but I just thought it was worth pointing out.  I do love your input on these things because I value your opinion and I tend to be pretty charged about them.  Probably that whole hindsight thing ;).....

eta:  mc I don't mean to drag your dh in to this, he's just the best possible example I can imagine when it comes to being healthy, facing a challenge and coming out on top.  I'm not sure I articulated my point well though...

  • Yikes. I was only interested in a digital monitor so it wouldn't cross signals with neighbors' devices or our wi-fi. I would ditch the monitor, but I can't hear DS if the washer/dryer or dishwasher is running.

I wish the first page of the article would load so I could see more about the people they're quoting, but I'm getting error messages on the site. As I was just telling TXAggieBride in an email, radiation was something I used to worry about, and haven't so much in a while for some reason. It does worry me that my DH has about 5 computers in one small room (for his job) and that DS's crib is right on the other side of that wall. So the two people I love most are often in or near the room with the most radiation. :(

It would be really hard to change when all this technology has become such an ingrained part of life. Even if you don't have a wi-fi router in your home, it seems that almost every business offers wi-fi these days, and if the signal spans dozens of feet, even your neighbors' could affect you. I think it would even be hard to find a phone with a cord!

I can only hope these sources are faulty when I consider all the devices in our home that are potential hazards. Even so, it makes me uneasy, because I think, "If the jury is still out on a potential safety issue, better to err on the safe side." For now, my DH and I are both sitting here on our laptops, using wi-fi and I have a DECT monitor in the nursery. Huh?

I would like to hear more thoughts on this. Anyone know of more research?
