Writing a Will and other Precautions

We are so bad about this.  I ordered the papers from an online site (We plan on having more children but want something in writing in case something happens before then, cost us $50).  We plan on keeping it in a safe in our basement.

    I was just wondering what everyone else did.  Is this enough to hold up if something were to happen to us?  We would want to make sure DS is taken care of and in the case that something happens to either one of us, that the other one is taken care of.  Just wondering what steps everyone else has taken.

    we are in the middle of having ours done with our lawyer.  it is expensive but worth it--we are not messing around with our daughter's life and future should anything happen.  i don't know how well those online versions stand legally.  ours will go hand in hand with our life insurance policies and will all be notorized by our lawyer.

     

    also--you don't have to wait until you are done having children to write a will. it will be worded: "our child/all future children".  so you don't have to keep having it updated/revised.

    It will probably stand as long as you have it signed by two witnesses in your presence (it's best if they are people who wouldn't benefit under the Will and they must see you sign it before they sign it) and it's best to have it notarized as well. They can't sell that stuff online unless it can be legally effective but it's still up to you to take the proper steps. By the way, the thing about the witnesses is the law in Texas but I believe it is the law elsewhere also. You can probably Google Estate laws in your specific state to check.

    I just asked my folks about this. They said that they had a written one by themselves and it was signed. It basically just said who my sister and I would live with and that we would get all of their assets.  They had it mostly for when they went on vacation without us a couple times.  When I was 2 my folks got a lawyer and did a legal will
