Cloth Diapering

How many to wash at a time?

How many diapers do you usually wash at a time? Today I washed all my dirty diapers and several new ones in, and my washer was quite full. It made me wonder how many is too many. I know you need room for them to get proper agitation to get clean...

  • I have a front loader and I do 2-3 days worth with a full FULL pail and it really stuffs my whole washer. I do the extra water feature and use a lot of detergent and they come out fine everytime.

  • The new article from RnG actually suggested that you fill the washer pretty well.  They used the reference of washing your hands.  When you wash,  you have to rub them together to get them clean.  Let me see if I can find a link for you.

Thanks. The hands analogy is a good point, hadn't thought of it like that!

  • I was wondering about this. I have kind of an old washer (was here when we bought the house) and am coming up with so many laundry questions!

  • Bury your nose in the diapers when they come out of the wash - that will let you know whether they are clean.

I prefer not to fill my washer more than halfway, although I have filled it up to 2/3 before without problems.  I've read that you shouldn't wash more than 18 diapers at a time - this seems like a good rule of thumb for my large top-loader, but not all washers are the same size.

I washed two days' worth of diapers (2u2) the other day and they still smelled after the detergent hot wash.  I had to run an extra load. I never had to do that before (while washing diapers for one baby every other day).  So now I wash every day.
