Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DS's Stats and a "small head" question...

So he's not quite 4 months...see siggy...and he weighs 14lbs, 3.2oz and is 26.75in long!

Weight - 54th percentile (so why does everyone keep telling me how chubby he is?)

Height - 98th percentile

And, poor guy, his head was in the 30th percentile last time at 39cm and this time it was 40.5cm and dropped down into the 20-something percentile.

His head doesn't SEEM small though. I have people telling me his head looks big! lol. Does anyone else have a baby with a "small" head? Is there a problem with his head being "small"?

Re: DS's Stats and a "small head" question...

  • at his 4mo, Ethan was 90% in weight, 85% in length and 10% in head size. I asked the pedi, and he said as long as he was meeting all of his milestones (and he is actually ahead on most things) it's nothing to worry about. Some people just have smaller heads. My husband's is relatively small, so I'm sure he comes by it honest.

  • my LO's head has always been at the 25th percentile. i never realized how small her head was until i saw her next to a baby who weighed less than she did-- but my daughter looked so tiny in comparison because her head is so little!

there's nothing wrong with having a smallish head. for my daughter, it just means excellent head and neck control!

  • My baby has a "small head" ...17%. He's happy and moving right along so I am not worried.

I did read rapid growth could indicate a problem, but otherwise it's anatomical. The controls are pretty tight as well, so that's why you don't really notice it.

  • I guess the only reason I'm a little concerned is not because he is in the lower percentile for head circumference but because it dropped from the 30th percentile to the 20th percentile. When the pedi said that I was like "Oh no, did his head shrink?" And he said that no, it grew 1.5 centimeters. He definitely didn't say it was any big deal or anything so I'm sure there is nothing to worry about, I guess.

Mine went from 20% at 2m to 10% at 4mo. Again, if the pedi's not concerned, don't borrow trouble for yourself.

I guess we're in the same boat then! I'm going to stop googling because my son has been reaching milestones on track. DS's head is a little flat in the back and I thought maybe that is why it is a little smaller. Is your sons head that way too?

Yup, sure is. We can start a club together.

Well, there we go. It makes sense, really. Let's see how many people are in our club.

  • Charlie has a small head too!  15th percentile at his 2 month and I 'm guessing it won't be much bigger at his 4 month.  His daddy has a small head too!
