December 2010 Moms

Looking for some good books...

I just posted a response to the "killing time" post about trying to find a new book series to read and I thought I'd re-post on the board to see if you all had suggestions.

I'm a voracious reader and like a wide variety of books.  I'm not into paranormal books, but besides that just about anything goes.  Any ideas would be welcome!

Re: Looking for some good books...

  • I like all of Jennifer Weiner's books but since you are pregnant 'Little Earthquakes' is a great mommy read.

The Hunger Games trilogy is a great YA series.  I'm not sure if it's 'paranormal' b/c of the whole vampire thing but the Sookie Stackhouse books (True Blood series is based on them) are light and entertaining.

  • I'm currently reading "The Heretic's Wife" by Brenda Rickman Vantrease.  Historical fiction set in Tudor England.
  • Have you read the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon?  They are by far my favorites and everyone I've recommended them to has loved them...they're kind of addicting.

I'm reading Freedom right now which is also good.

One of my other favorites is Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

  • I just ordered Oogy. It is new.

I also ordered the Vick dogs book but I get the impression that is more of a coffee table book.

Some I like: Enzo: The Art of Racing in the Rain

    Water for Elephants

    An Inconvenient Elephant

The Host (but you may not like that)

  • One of my favorite, lesser known series is The Sun Sword Series by Michelle West. They're fantasy, but not what I would call paranormal (ghoss, etc.).  She creates complex characters and places them in a rich world that I find totally absorbing. She also has an excellent command of language which I appreciate. The books are long (some over 800 pages), but fantastic.  She has another series in her maiden name, Michelle Sagara, that's a bit lighter reading which is also excellent. That one is a series of 6 books called the Elantra Chronicles.  Now that I've written this I realize I haven't read any of her books recently and I should get caught up before baby comes.

  • Great ideas.  Thanks!

I've read the Outlander series (loved it) and the Hunger Games series (also loved it) and The Host (LOOOOVED it...I guess I considered this more sci fi than paranormal...ha ha).

Keep em coming!  Thanks to all!

Shantaram isn't a series but it's a looong book.  It's loosely based off of the authors life.  He escapes from an Australian prison and runs to India where he lives for many years and becomes involved in not only the black market but also establishes a free health clinic in the slums of Bombay (don't worry, I'm not telling you anything not on the jacket) but he's an amazing story teller.

Have you read the Into The Wilderness series?  Jamie and Claire make a brief appearance in the first book so same time period but it's colonial US vs. Scotland.  They're by Sarah Donati.  Not nearly as good as Outlander but still good.

  • i second "the hunger games."  I never would have read it on my own, but it was handed to me by a friend and she insisted that i read it.  I loved it.

ken follet's "pillars of the earth" is long and good.

    dan brown's deception point.

of course john sampson and patricia cornwell are both winners IMO

  • Two of the best books I've read in a long time:

A Thousand Splended Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund

A Thousand Splendid Suns is such an amazing book.

I reread HP7 a few months ago. It was even better the 2nd time around.

  • If you are looking for any super easy "chick flick" reads: anything by Sophie Kinsella and Lauren Weisberger.

I actually haven't found any books lately that I was sad to finish because they were so good. It is like a hunger that can't be satisfied. I will have to try some of the recs here.

  • Here are some favorite authors:

    Janet Evanovich

    Jodi Picoult

    Elin Hilderbrand

    Nicholas Evans

    Nicholas Sparks

    Harlan Coban

  • Voracious reader here too.  I've thoroughly enjoyed the Janet Evanovich / Stephanie Plum series (easy and light with out loud laughing while reading), the Sue Grafton alphabet murder mystery series (I think she's on W so there's a bunch of reading for you), and I just finished the Stieg Larsson books (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, etc.) which were freaking awesome.  Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is also one of my favorite books that I pick up and re-read every few years.

  • When I read A Thousand Splendid Suns, I cried for about two days.  My husband was starting to worry about me.

I loved Belong to Me, but Marisa De Santos. It was so lovely.

  • Try Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, it is a fabulous read and if you like it she does several other books about the same characters.

I read Time of Your Life recently and I can't remember who wrote it but it's about a new mom who travels back in time, it sounds cheesie but was really good.

I saw someone else suggested Belong to Me by Marisa De Santos and they are right it was a really good book. It's the second book about these characters the first one is Love Walked In. Personally I liked Belong to me better.
