Those who wake & feed around 3-4am

DS does this and I just wonder if you all feel the same exhaustion I do. I usually go to bed between 9 & 10 and my husband will wake DS at 11 for his feeding. I wake for his 3-4am feeding but by the time we get back to bed I feel like its nearly time to wake for the day at 7am!

We were planning on keeping this pattern when I go back to work, but I feel like the "catnap" from 4ish to 7 just isn't enough. How do you make it work for you?

  • Any reason why you are waking him for feedings?  Once we got out of the 'weight gaining woods' we would let DD sleep till she woke us up to eat.

  • Are you waking LO to eat?  If he's at his birth weight (or more) I would let him sleep as long as he wants  during the night.  You may get a few extra hours that way and might not feel so tired during the day.

DS used to get up to eat around 4 now he STTN.  He'll eventually outgrow that feeding.

    GL until then!

  • Your LO is pretty young.  Are you going back to work any time soon?  If so, I'm sorry.  If not, know that your LO will start to sleep longer and longer stretches.  But how long that takes depends on your baby and his schedule.  If DS wakes up around 3, usually it's because of gas.  Most of the time I give him a paci to calm him down.  It takes a little while, but usually he passes the gas and goes back to sleep.  If I end up feeding him, then I just miss out on sleep.  I've been amazed at how I'm coping without much sleep.  I positively love sleep!  Sorry I don't have any tips.  I have found, though, that getting LO on a schedule during the day helps him sleep better at night.  It's worth a shot!

  • You are lucky your LO is sleeping so well, my baby is up 3-4 times at night.  I think you are getting quite a bit of sleep!
  • I go back to work next week and we wake up to eat around that time to feed. DH wakes up at 5:30 for the day and i usually get up at 6. I go to bed when baby does. So if I'm tired after we put DS down at 8:30, I'll sleep too. DH will feed DD her 9:30 feeding and the 12:30 feeding. I get up around 3 or 4 pretty much for the day.

Not sure what we're going to do when work starts for me, but so far it's worked fine.

  • I don't wake to feed at that time but DD #2 wakes up between 4-5am.  She goes to bed at 7pm, nurses at around 1 or 2am, then nurses again at 4 or 5am.  I am up for the day at 6am to get ready for work.  It really isn't that bad.  I guess my body is just used to it.

I might be able to help.  Before leaving the hospital, the recommend that you wake LO every 2-3 hours to eat until they get back to their birth weight, since it's normal for them to lose a little weight after birth.  Once they get back to or pass their birth weight up, you no longer have to wake them during the night to feed them.

My friends suggested we wake him for the 11pm feeding with the hope that it will help him stretch eventually to sleeping through the night. Not yet though!

I tried doing that too but it didn't matter, he wakes up at 1:30ish regardless of whether he goes down at 7:30, 8:30 or 9p and then up again at 5ish. My biggest challenge is getting him back to sleep after the 5am feeding.

  • The 3-4am shift is exhausting alright. Tongue Tied Though consider yourself lucky that you get such a long stretch of sleep from 9/10pm-3/4am!
