Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Constipation and Solid foods

My LO is 7 mos and is breastfeeding about 6-8 times per day but is also eating a tablespoon of wholegrain baby cereal mixed with a few teaspoons of applesauce, or sweet potatoes, or peas or carrots 2-3 times a day. Her poop is the consistency of paste, but she seems to be straining and getting frustrated a lot more when she goes.

Have any of you experienced this before? Is this something I should be concerned with, or is it just part of the transition to solid foods?

Thx.

  • We're going through the same thing here. I think it's just part of the transition- her tummy is doing new things!

  • Stay away from the apples...they definitely constipate. Try adding in some prunes and pears.

  • carrots back her up.
  • Peas made DD constipated.  It took a few days after we stopped them for her system to get back to normal.  We started sweet potatoes after peas, and it seemed to help her poop get back to normal.  We haven't tried apples, but I hear it can back them up.

  • We dont feed our daughter cereal anymore. Every time she ate cereal she would get constipated so I asked the pedi, She said that it was fine not to feed her cereal as long as she was eating other things.

     So maybe its the cereal.

  • We skipped cereal and never had an issue transitioning to solids. Try the "p" fruits...pears, prunes, peaches. They're supposed to help get things going.

This. Prunes work WONDERS for DD...like within hours.
