Baptism party menu?

We're having a gathering after DS's baptism in a few weeks. I don't have any time to cook (long commute, DS is having surgery 9 days before the baptism, etc.), so we're catering.

I'm not sure how to go. Do I go with the Italian restaurant and get a few platters of pasta, salad, and garlic knots (pricey)? Or do I go with the local (very good) supermarket and get a deli platter, some hors d'oeuvres, and sides (also pricey, but less so)? I'm also ordering a cake.

What have you guys done? Advice is appreciated. TIA!

Re: Baptism party menu?

  • Of your choices my vote is the deli platters because of price.

But you could also make a few trays of baked ziti now, throw them in the freezer, then thaw the day before and bake.  And you could get salad to go with it and throw in a few loaves of garlic bread and you're good. Maybe get some frozen apps to serve while the ziti is baking.

  • I did the heros, and salads hors d'oeuvres . I got a cake and desserts from Costco. Very easy
  • We did pulled pork for DD baptism. Just make the pork in the crock pot ahead of time, reheat in the crock the morning of. Grab some rolls, provolone, side salads adn you are good to go! WAY cheaper too (you can get a whole pork loin on sale for $1.99/lb)

  • I did deli platters with a few salads and bakery cupcakes. We only had about 15 people.

  • We are doing lunch at a restaurant by our church because we cannot fit everyone in our house.

I like the Italian idea, but it can be hard to eat off a plate in your lap, so I say deli platter.

  • Here's what we did last weekend for DD's Baptism (we made most of the food ourselves, but ordered some):

Apps- Pretzel Tray (catered), veggie tray, various chips/dips

Italian Option: Salad, Baked Ziti, Meatballs/sauce, rolls, provolone cheese (for sandwiches)

Other option: Chicken strips (from Chick-Fil-A...yum!) roasted potatoes (catered), green bean cassarole,  homemade mac-n-chz.

We then ordered a cake and fruit tray and made a cheese cake, brownies, and chocolate candy (for favors).

Drinks: Wine, beer, soda, and bottled water

    Hmm... I think that's it. :)

  • Our LO is being baptized next weekend.  We're Polish, so every holiday/special occasion = lots of kielbasa.  The grandma's are helping with some sides, probably potatoes and kapusta, etc.  A friend of the family is making a cake, because I secretly hate the cakes you get at the grocery store (the frosting grosses me out).

I would do whatever is easiest, regardless of price.  If you can afford it, do it.

  • Verdict: we're doing a brunch. Bagels, cream cheese, fruit tray, mimosas, bloody marys, juice, coffee, tea, breakfast casserole. The baptism's at 10, so I think we'd be eating by around 12.
