Cloth Diapering

Making a cloth diaper cake or cupcake?

On a budget of $50????      What would you include?   I want it to be a bit of a sampler of dif. things?   A good friend of mine is pregnant and wants to cloth diaper.  She just wants to use what we use, but I know that dif. dipes work for dif. babies, so I thought I'd make a cloth dipe cake/cupcake for a gift and way for her to try stuff other than what we have.    We use primarily gdiapers with a bit of bumgenius and flip thrown in.  I just added a blueberry dipe, as well:)

Suggestions?    How to get the most bang for my buck?    In actuality, I'll probably go over $50, but I'd like to keep it close (and then add accessories to it!).

  • Cottonbabies had some BG 3.0s up as seconds.  $12 and free shipping would be a great way to pick that up for her to try.

  • I make diaper cakes and cloth diaper cakes and I usually spend about $75 for a nice size cake.  I use mostly prefolds as the cake and I add snappis, and couple of Etsy covers, washcloths for wipes and a cloth diaper safe cream as accessories.  You can always buy seconds and keep the cake small to stay on budget.

  • To add some bulk in the middle, you can use prefolds.  They wouldn't be seen, and since she'll probably use more of the other types, you could probably just pick up a cheap set of Gerbers for just a couple bucks and she can use them as burp cloths, rags, or changing pads.  You could even dye them if you just want to add some color - just make sure to wash them thoroughly afterward, or you could leak some of the color onto other diapers!

You could look into getting used diapers or seconds which would cut back on costs.

You'll need to post pics and tell us how you made it once it's finished!  I have a friend I want to do this for, but have no clue how to make a diaper cake!

  • My FIL (yes you read that right :) ) made an AWESOME CD cake for my shower.  He wrapped cheap grapevine wreaths from Michael's in GMD PFs to create 3 tiers & mounted it on a flat, wire circle he found there.  He tied a ribbon around each tier as decoration.  He filled the inside with snappis, thirsties covers, sample size CD detergents, butt spray, cloth wipes, and some other baby stuff not CD related (thermometer, mittens for NBs, etc).  It was SO cute & all the ladies gushed over it so he felt really special.  I am sure he spent more like $100 but it could be scaled down for sure.

  • When I make them I usually use a dozen or two prefolds and then add covers, a few pockets, snappis and some reusable wipes.  If you used a dozen prefolds 1 BG 4.0 (1st qual) or 3.0 second,  1 Flip set, and 6 wipes.  I think that would be about 50ish.
