Can you sleep train a toddler?

DD has never been a good sleeper and still has issues going to sleep in her room and often walks to our room at night. It is partially my fault because I always wanted to hold her to go to sleep.

DS has been a much better sleeper until recently. I've always held him too. Not a big deal but now he is wanting to go to our bed to fall asleep. Problem is once DH and I lay down we end up falling asleep too and don't carry him back to his bed. There have been a couple nights where both kids are in our bed and I end up going to DD's bed to sleep without a foot in my face or knee in my back.

I wish I would have sleep trained from the beginning but I was ignorant on it until I started frequenting this board. Is it too late?

Re: Can you sleep train a toddler?

  • No, its not too late.  I'd start gradual.  Can you lay with him in his bed?  Then leave once he falls asleep.  The hard part will be staying awake yourself!  Then start sitting on the bed, then sit next to the bed, then stand by the door...you get the idea.  I did that with Jakob when he was about 2 years old.

  • Definitely not too late. Sleepy Planet's Sleep Easy Solution has a whole section on "older" sleep training.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • It's not too late, just a littler harder:) have you read the Ferber book? Lots of info for toddlers.
