Question for the SAHM's
When do you plan on going back to work? Will you make a career change or do what you did before you had kids?

I don't have a firm plan as far as timing, but going back to work for me will almost certainly entail a career change or at least a significant career shift. DH and I are both lawyers, and unless he changes jobs to one with more predictability, having me at home or at least having set (and limited) hours will probably be best for our family. I actually gave up firm life for a long-term contract position doing securities research even before DS was born, so I probably would have moved on to something different no matter what. DH is still on board with firm life for now. We'll see how things go when he's up for partner.
My problem is that all of the alternative career ideas I have tend to involve getting another degree. I had this grand plan of volunteering at a couple of different places to get a feel for what I really wanted to do, but we dragged our feet on setting up some kind of child care so I could do the volunteering. I'm planning to do some more serious thinking/planning on this front over the next couple of months.
For the lawyers have you thought about working at a non profit or association as counsel? The hours are generally 9-5 although I would say our general counsel works more than that (he has a few other roles on his plate), the Assistant General Counsel does not.
I know a lot of lawyers who don't practice and have successfully transitioned to other areas without additional degrees. I think there are a lot more opportunities out there than you realize.
I plan to SAH as long as possible, maybe go part time when DS starts pre-school. Ideally I would try to pop out #2 soon, so I would go back to work to stop again (plus I am getting old).
I am toying with the idea of changing careers. I just can't seem to find my niche. I wish I could go back to my early 20's and have a re-do career wise. I probably would have ended up in nursing. Now the thought of going back to school is quite daunting.
I tried a couple of times to get out of practicing. I don't think it's easy. A lot depends on your background. My experience doesn't transfer to other fields.
Not chiming in about the SAH part but for the lawyers- I work for a publishing company that employs a lot of non-practicing attorneys and the hours are very set (part time is 18 hours and full-time is 37.5 hours). If anyone wants info- send me a PM.
