my UO...dogs & cats

This seems to come up every few years in my area and it might be the law in some other places, but I think if you have dogs and cats and have no intent to ever breed them you should be required to have them fixed. Those pitiful humane society commercials about animals needing homes are really starting to get to me. And then I saw a stray momma dog the other day with no tags and from the look of her doggie boobs she was still nursing. As it is now, the annual licensing fee is greatly reduced if your dog is fixed in my county.

  • Who would disagree with this? I think this is probably a popular opinion.

I've taken strays from my neighborhood and had them spayed/neutered...ASPCA and some vets offer discounted rates if you bring in a stray...then they help find them homes.

  • Those commercials are killer! I just want to send them all my money whenever I see them!

I have this cousin that has had at least 4 different sets of dogs and is always talking about how she's going to breed them and sell the puppies and make such good money.  It makes me ill.  AND each time, she's ended up in some sort of tragedy resulting in having to have the dogs put down because they coudln't afford them. So depressing. I wish you had to have a license to breed dogs for sale.

My husband and his family get on my case about this. Funny thing is their dog is fixed. They just don't want uncle Sam telling them to do it.
  • In addition with this, I don't think just ANYONE should be allowed to breed. There should be limits and conditions to be met. If the state can drop in on a daycare on any given day, why not drop in on the breeders? But anyway.

The problem with trying to set a law for it is this: Those that license their dogs/cats would be required to have them spayed and neutered. However, I know boat loads of people that do not license their dog/cat. Therefore, there's no way of any organization or law that can say "HEY! YOU HAVE TO DO THIS! IT'S THE LAW!"

Is it a great thing? Yes. But mostly people who go thorugh the "hassle" of licensing and paying for that license, micro chipping and all of that, are more apt to be responsible pet owners and have their animals spayed and neutered. If you aren't licensing, you aren't having someone down your bag telling you to pay out of pocket.

I remember 2 years ago, they were talking about making veterinary expenses a taxable deduction.  Nothing came of it, but I thought if they did that more people might actually be responsible in providing appropriate care for their pets.

A friend of mine is a vet and he told me that veterinary expenses are soooo high because many people ask for treatments (often surgery) for their pets and then abandon the pets because they cannot afford what they just agreed to.
