Good OB's in Suffolk

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of a good OB in the Centereach, Selden, Stonybrook, PJ area.. I have gone to Dr. Ninia before as just my GYN but really am not happy with him. I do not have a preference of a male over a female Dr. Just one that will take the time to talk to me and not treat me like a number. I am a daughter of a OB GYN (he works in the city and I am not traveling there to see his recommended Dr's) and know how I should be treated... Any ideas??? I want to start interviewing Dr's because I am about 2.5 weeks pregnant( i should find out definitely next week, cross fingers please :) ) and just want to be ahead of the game

Thanks

Amanda

  • I'm in Coram and I see Dr. Leonard Kagan in Holbrook on Monday nights. He is the best. I had my baby in Feb. and really loved that Dr. Kagan was my doc. He has been doing this for over 30 years (actually delivered my friend and her siblings). He always answers all my questions, doesn't rush you or brush off a concern and his receptionist is the nicest lady.

  • A friend of mine just recommended the Stonybrook Midwives group-I don't know if this is quite what you're looking for, but they work with the physicians at Stonybrook hospital - where she delivered, as well. It's www.stonybrookmidwives.com

  • i go to contemporary women's care in smithtown....i absolutely love all the doctors there (after spending 2 years at suffolk OBGYN and hating the entire staff)....they are patient and caring and i have never had a bad experience. they are in the medical office building next to St. Catherine's :)

  • I live in St. James, and go to Dr. Scanlon in Huntington.  He's awesome.  Very calm, explains everything in easy to understand terms, and is always available through the service.  (I spoke to him at 6 am one morning).  There is another Dr. in his practice, Dr. Callan, and I dealt with her this week, (Dr. Scanlon is on vaca) and she was also great. The office also has lots of hours, early morning, and late evening.

  • It really depends on where you want to deliver. I am a Labor and Delivery nurse at St. Charles in Port Jeff and since knowing all of the doctors, I recommend Dr. Thomas Erhart. He is in a practice with a NP named Theresa and another doctor Dr. Sylvia Tufano. He delivered my first son and will delivering my second. I also like some of the docs in Suffolk OB/GYN but the problem with a big group is you dont know who will deliver you...and some of them you REALLY dont want! BTW, good choice leaving Dr. Ninia! If you need any more help or have questions please feel free to contact me....good luck!
  • Thank you all! When I originally posted this question, I was late but AF ended up showing... I am now 5.5 weeks pregnant and was verified through a test two days ago! My husband and I are ecstatic because we were having some problems a few months ago with his count, and TTC.

    @ BabyNurse,

Thank you for sharing that information with me. I have a scheduled appt for the first time (unfortunately) with Dr. Ninia. But I am going to Contact Dr. Erhart's office now. Thank you so much!

  • I cancelled my app't with Dr. Ninia and have an app't on October 11th with Dr. Tufano! I am so excited for this first app't! I just hope I can hear the baby's heartbeat! All my little worries will be pretty much gone once I hear that sound!

  • I am a little upset over these posts.  I have been seeing Dr. Ninia for at least 18 years.  He delivered both of my first two children and everthing was really great.  He is respectful, thorough, attentive, and takes all the time I need for him to explain things to me.  I was upset that he had to refer me to the high-risk OB/GYNs of Stony Brook Physicians for this last pregnancy, but I had so many risks and complications that he felt it would be in my best interest if I went to the specialists. I respect his professional opinion.  My only regret for this last pregnancy was that I couldn't have Dr. Ninia for all of my appointments and for the delivery and follow-up.  I really can't imagine what he could have done to have his name tarnished like this and to be "black-balled" in this forum.  Dr. Ninia is the third OB/GYN I've used since starting to see one as a teenager and I've gone back to him now that I am done with the high-risk doctors group.  None of the other practices that I went to were ever able to give me the kind of decent, respectful, and personal service that Dr. Ninia has given me all these years.  And although the Stony Brook OB/GYN Physicians Group high risk doctors and their Nurse Practitioner were wonderful to me and got me through a stressful pregnancy, the tightly limited appointment times and service I received at their office of maybe 20 or more doctors, 10 or more admistrators, and a waiting room packed with at times more than 30 people was much less than desirable compared to the friendly, personal attention that I have received from Dr. Ninia's office staff, most whom have been with him for many, many years.  I just felt I had to defend Dr. Ninia and let everyone else who is reading these posts know that whatever bad experience you had with him is not the norm or possibly even as bad as implied.  What started out as Amanda's request for a good OB/GYN referral really turned into a string of Dr. Ninia bashing posts that have really upset me.  I think if someone is unhappy with a Dr.'s services, they should be able to be straight with that Dr. and give them the chance to resolve the issue in person, not go behind their back and tarnish their reputation.  The worst is babynurse's post where she implies what I can only assume is something awful.  I think there is an appropriate forum for one medical professional to make an accusation of medical misconduct against another, and this was not it.  Her opinion as a delivery nurse carries alot of weight for the rest of us.  If she has a problem with him or any other doctor, she should report it to the hospital or medical ethics committee or something.  I hope Amanda finds an OB/GYN that makes her feel very comfortable and happy. But I think we all need to remember that finding an OB/GYN that we are comfortable and happy with is at times just a difficult and long process and is a very personal choice.  Just because we are not 100 percent comfortable with one doesn't mean we should imply they are a bad doctor - just not our personal choice.
  • No one was saying he was a horrible doctor nor did anyone "black ball" him as you stated. We have opinions and can give them freely.  My mother and sister love Dr. Ninia; I however did not like his attitude towards a few things that we spoke about when I was last there a few years ago.  His personality and mine clashed.  I have heard from quite a few friends of mine that have seen Dr. Ninia that they too did not like his service.  We can pick and chose who we want to see as patients and I am glad we can.  Please do not make any of us feel as if we have hurt anyone's feelings when all we did was simply give our opinions in an OPEN and PUBLIC forum.

Thank you for defending our statements. That other woman was clearly offended and I did not mean her to be.  I just meant I knew how it felt to have a difference of opinion with a healthcare professional especially in something so important as in your delivery. I work with all doctors that I may not personally like but am always professional and would definately make being my patients advocate as number one priority. I'm glad you are happy with your OB choice and good luck to you!!
