TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Prozac good or bad?

I am on the fence about maybe taking prozac to get back to normal after hitting some moderate depression.  I am concerned about taking drugs that alter my mood in general, but feeling a bit ready to try anything to get out of this hole.  I am concerned about the commitment (6 months +) and any negative side effects that may come if/when we get pregnant again.  Does anyone have any personal experience in this area?  My doc gave me a prescription, but suggested I really way the pro's and con's before moving ahead.

Re: Prozac good or bad?

  • I personally don't have any experience with them but I have seem many of my friends really benefit from antidepressants. I totally understand the side effects your worried about. Have your tried seeing someone to talk to? I, in general, find that licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) are good at talking about the problems and helping to find "solutions". Good luck! I know my RE gave me the name of a LCSW who dealt with infertility and pregnancy loss.

  • I've been on prozac since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1995. (OMG, that's a long time ago!) It helps raise my serotonin (sp?) levels, which in turn decreases the pain I feel from the fibro (a muscular disease). My PCP here in Colorado told me to go off of it as soon as I got pregnant, which I did. When I had the D&E in May I immediately asked my OB/GYN to go back on it. She said I shouldn't have stopped in the first place. According to her, it's the most trusted anti-depressant that can be used during pregnancy. She said if I wanted to, during my next pregnancy I could take it up to the third tri and then decide whether or not to stay on it.

  • I have never taken Prozac, but I have taken Wellbutrin.  FWIW, according to my OB, the only two I know that are safe during pregnancy are Wellbutrin and Zoloft (although I see Jill's doc says Prozac is safe too).  It's a very personal decision, but I found that medication really can help.  For me, it is in conjunction with therapy.  Just don't be discouraged if it doesn't work for you, you may just need to try another kind.  I took Zoloft for a week and hated it (it actually made me more depressed), so I switched to Wellbutrin and it's much better.  Good luck!

  • I've been on meds for anxiety since my senior year of high school.  I started with Prozac and switched because they kept having to up my dose.  Since then, I took Zoloft and Celexa.  I LOVED the Celexa and was on the same dose from sophomore year of college until last week when my RE said it would be safer to take Zoloft.  So now I'm trying it again.  I tried the Wellbutrin, which is also supposed to be safe, but it didn't do much for me.
