Steven is having a hard time falling asleep at school. He just isn't a huge fan of sleeping on his nap mat quite yet and if he does fall asleep he only sleeps for 20-40 minutes, so then he's a cranky mess the rest of the day and will not take another nap, no matter what I do. He's always awake when I get there when the rest of the boys are sleeping still- he's just a REALLY light sleeper and any unfamiliar noise will wake him up.
I've picked him up at 12:30 a few times, so I feed him a little more at home and then he goes down for his normal nap at 1:30pm. I don't mind doing this, I actually prefer it b/c he'll come home and take his normal 3 hour nap.
I think he'll probably get more used to it once we transition him to a toddler bed. But still, that only gives him 1-1.5 hours of naptime, when he usually sleeps double or more than that at home.
Would you keep picking him up early? I don't mind it at all, unless I have a doctors appt, or something where I can't get him early. TIA!
Re: WWYD? re: preschool/MDO naptime
First of all, dude, a 3-HOUR napper??? I didn't even know those existed. Lucky you!!
To your question, yes, I'd probably pick him up early. I think that learning to nap elsewhere is a good thing, but not if it means that he's basically a cranky, sleep-deprived mess the rest of the day.
He's been there about 6 weeks and has yet to sleep an hour during nap time.
There was another kid that wouldn't nap, and that mother started picking him up early. This was part of the problem with S- he would follow the other kid and get up when he did. It might be better now that he isn't going to be there at naptime, but still, it's the length of nap I'm more concerned about.
They do play music and the lights are off, so it's fairly dark, about as dark as it would be at home.
Ditto - to all of this! I can't remember C ever taking a 3 hour nap - she sleeps great at night, but has always been a horrible napper (even though she needs them!).
have you talked to his teacher about it? is there anything she can do to help him sleep better? pat his back if she sees him stirring or put him in a darker, quieter place in the room?
Do they do anything after nap time at MDO? or is it just wake up and go?
i probably wouldn't pick my kid up early, but that's just me. also i probably don't fully get what a tired, cranky toddler acts like because dd can still function even if she gets no nap. so my opinion might be skewed.
Yep, and she already does all that. She sits next to him and pats him, rubs his back, etc. The room is on the smaller side, so there really isn't anyother place she can put him. It's just wake and go.
in that case i see no reason not to pick him up early before nap when you can. and on the days you can't maybe just put him to bed earlier. and hopefully he'll come around one day and be able to take longer naps on the mat. dd used to only sleep for 45-1hour on a map, but now she's consistently sleeping 1.5-2hours.
