For those that started solids at 4 months can you tell me how you introduced them? What foods came first etc.?
J is showing all kids of interest in foods and what we're eating etc. We also tried feeding him his formula with a baby spoon the other night and he was super excited! He did really well with it. We're hoping to start cereal in a couple of weeks but not sure how much to give, how often and when to introduce new things.
TIA!

Re: Starting solids....
I did Malanga first... for 3 days and then would add something else, carrots for 3 days, squash, green beans blah blah until he had his puree complete
This is how I started both of mine:
When they woke up in the morning I gave them a regular full sized bottle. About a half hour before they would be looking for the next feeding, I made a full sized bottle, but used about an oz of it to mix with a tablespoon of cereal (I did oatmeal since I heard that rice tastes bland and can be constipating). It is important to start solid feedings when LO is hungry but not starving.
For the first few days both of mine didn't really know what to do and spit the cereal out, crying the whole time. I just kept spooning it back in and offering them sips of the bottle inbetween bites. It took about a week or two for them to get used to the spoon and open their mouths readily.
Once they got the hang of it, I went straight to three meals a day, introducing fruit and veggie purees. In the beginning a container of stage 1 lasted for all three meals. I would feed them a tablespoon of cereal prepared like I said above and 1/3 of the fruit/veggie mixed in, then the rest of the bottle. In a few weeks I increased to 1/2 a container at each feeding, then a whole container.
When they reached the point that they were getting filled with the solids at each meal, I dropped the bottle part of the feedings during solids and offered them about 2-3 hours later when i knew they would be hungry enough to drink the whole thing.
Editing to add in that I alternated a fruit then a veggie, then a fruit, etc when I started purees. Neither of mine ever gave me a problem eating veggies after tasting fruit first. In fact Adrianna doean't really care for fruit too much but LOVES green beans and squash. They are her absolute favorites!
Wow, cant believe the time has come for J to start solids! I actually didnt start solids with Big E till almost 8 month per pedi's recommendation. Pedi's tend to do the starting solids a bit differently and you may want to ask J's pedi...they usually give instruction on the order to introduce foods. i.e. first cereals, then yellow veggies, then green veggies, then fruit, etc. The key is to give the same food for 3 days in a row before introducing a new one so that if an allergy develops you can catch it. Many recommend doing veggies before fruits just because many babies will like the fruit more and reject the veggie if they get it after. The amount to give is to start slow and gradually increase as tolerated as PP mentioned. Good luck and have fun at this new stage of J's development!

Wow, he's getting so big! Just makes sure he gets his real food (formula or breastmilk) first. Solids are just complimentary foods, not his main nutrition.
We waited until 6 months per the pedi's recommendation because that's when Andrew had all 4 signs of solid food readiness. (interest, loss of tongue thrust, sitting up unasisted, and pincher grasp) Up until that time, Andrew was content playing with a spoon at meal times to be a part of the social aspect.
We didn't start three meals a day until 8.5 months.
But you can use the solid charts from www.wholesomebabyfood.com as a guideline. I printed it out and posted it on the fridge to keep track of what he had tried when.

I'm trying to tell him this but he's not having it!
You should have seen him opening his mouth for that spoon and yesterday he was looking at Alexis eat his Whopper like he was getting ready to fight him for it. He looked genuinely upset that Alexis was not sharing lol
