so should wic provide formula?

or force women to breasfeed?

Do you think social assisatnce should provide diapers? Or should familes who cannot afford diapers cloth diaper?

Interesting thread popped up while I was on bancation and I'm not sure you beat that horse into the ground.

  • I lurve you.

I think social assistance should provide formula and cloth diapers.

Breastfeeding isn't always a choice, but CDing is.

I love the new pic.  Is she saying , Wanna make something of it, bumpie?

  • Of course I think WIC should provide formula. BUT - I think they should encourage breastfeeding and help mothers with knowledge and support. Possibly LCs?

What is social assistance will not provide cloth diapers?  Should they provide disposables?  Even if they provide cloth diapers, where would they be washed?  Many who live in poverty do not own washers.

    CDing! Your DD is cute!

Yes WIC should provide one with formula. I'm on WIC, lost my job , got pregnant and gave birth 7 months ago. It definitely helped.

This, and many day cares do not accept cloth diapers either.

Indeed.  This is her fighting look.  Bring it.

  • Welcome back!  I see you added a new number to the mix.  Sorry about the Yankees, too.

Ah, it must be Thursday...we are talkign about poor people again.

WIC actually provides breast pumps (Medela PISA) and formula vouchers to moms in NY.  They encourage breast feeding, but also formula feeding.  If you receive a pump, it does not limit the formual vouchers.  I'm not certain if the standards are different elsewhere.  WIC also provides vouchers that can be used at local Farmers Markets, too.

Generally, when you receive Food Stamps (which is differnet than WIC) you can also receive Cash Assistance which would go to cover diapers.  I do not believe this would be enough to buy a proper CD stash.

True.  Then they should provide a choice between the two.

We have WIC and they never forced me to nurse. I was able to do it for 10 weeks before the medical issues surfaced. They were totally understanding. So yes, I think they should provide formula. I also think diapers would be nice, but we CD so it doesn't really matter anyway.

I wish they included 3rd Foods on the checks. DS is so over purees that I am not going to use it any more. No use in wasting what someone else can have.

  • I think WIC should provide Formula. Not all people are able to breastfeed for various reasons. As far as encouraging it, our WIC office does-- very much so.

Diapering.. I think they should provide some supply of diapers...maybe not all you'll need, but anything helps.

I read the same thread you are speaking of yesterday... =)

    I'm not poor.

  • I think they should provide formula.  In Iowa they provide formula but if you breastfeed they provide you with a pump.  A hospital grade one for the first 3 months and a Medela PISA pump for when you go back to work.

If they provided a diaper service as well I would totally CD but I live in an apartment and its $1 for washing and $1 for drying and I go through about $10 a week for laundry; adding diapers would be way too much!!

  • I think that wic should provide formula and cloth and disposable diapers. I think it is the mother decision on breastfeeding vs formula and cloth vs disposable diapers. I am a formula feeder and use disposable diapers and I don't think it would be very fair for those who can't breastfeed to not supply them with formula and like PP most day cares don't do cloth and where would they wash these.

  • I think they should help provide formula and diapers, but it should be store brand. We save money by having DD on Up & Up diapers and formula and I think the government should save money that way too.

This was my thought as well. If you can't afford formula and diapers, it's very likely you don't have a washer or dryer. BUT I do also think it should only cover generic brands unless you have something from your pedi.

I agree with this. We use walmart Formula and diapers to help save some money.

Kicking it old school today.  I'm a post whore today but I've been gone all week!

  • People forget this isn't about their precious tax dollars it's about CHILDREN. Some children are in horrible conditions that most people could not fathom and some just have parents that are simply struggling. Why don't those kids deserve the same as any other child food and clean diapers?

Pretty sure everyone knows I am a big BF advocate but no mom should ever be forced to do anything. Formula should be provided, LC help should also be provided be that a pump for a mom that has to work or be in school or trouble shooting for moms with problems.

But my daughter can't drink the store brand stuff.  She has horrible gas and spits it all up.

I'm not saying their shouldn't be any exceptions. But I am betting that their are quite a few infints that would be fine on store brand formula and diapers.

  • I think they should offer help, but not fully support the family. Reliance on the government is strong and the more you give the more people rely.. I know not everyone takes advantage of the government and it sucks for those who really need it. If people are going to continue to have children then they need to take some responsibility. I'm not talking about the people who are down on their luck either. The government should enforce better standards and put money towards helping these people get on their feet.

"Career" government families will continue to have children and rely on programs like this to take care of them. I know getting help for them is a long haul. I don't disagree that they should help the LO's that get stuck in a diaper for a 5-6 hour period, because their mom can't afford to change a diaper. I want them to help and I think one of the better ways is to help those get a job or an education to get a job.
