s/o weight: Does your OB mention yours?

I see posts pretty often about OBs commenting on people's weight gain, whether good or bad. I've been through two different practices now, and have seen multiple doctors in each, and never once has anybody said a word about my weight unless I've asked a specific question. Granted, my gain was pretty slow and steady last pregnancy (although I did lose enough in 1st tri to put me on the "underweight" border)... but this time it's a lot more rapid... yet still, no mention. Ever.

Just curious how common it really is for an OB/midwife to express any sort of interest or concern..... or if it's just one of those things that tends to be off their radar unless seriously problematic.

Re: s/o weight: Does your OB mention yours?

  • My midwife hasn't said a word about my weight gain.

  • Nobody says anything to me.  My OB always tells me "your numbers look good" and I assume that includes weight (along with my blood pressure and belly measurement).

  • My OB has mentioned it every time. At first because I was losing weight til my 24 week appointment he saw a minor gain. and at my 28 week appointment, he made a comment about me gaining to much for a 4 week period (7 lbs), but in general he hasn't shown too much concern just comments about it.

  • My ob has said nothing. I did ask my first appt since I'm overweight what would he like my gain to be at. I did not want to gain much he told me his feelings in it and that was it. He did say if the baby was not as big as he should be then he would change what I was doing other then that he would not say much.
  • Last pregnancy I gained 20 lbs by 20 weeks, and he told me to "order small Blizzards instead of large ones" from there on out. Nice.

This time I've gained 20 lbs in 28 weeks, and he hasn't said anything.

  • My MW practice doesn't even weigh us unless we want to be weighed.  I have no idea how much I've gained!

Lol that's my kind of advice!

My midwives haven't mentioned weight other than to ask what I have gained at each appointment (scale is in the bathroom), and once to tell me I was doing great.

  • Mine has been a stickler since we first saw him.  Because I'm tiny he's concerned about the baby being too big and having an unecessary c-section.  He's also concerned about the HBP flaring up at the end, but no GD so that's good.  He mentions it every time and lets me know if I'm on track or gives me scoldings if it's too much too fast.
  • My Dr and midwife mention my weight at every appt.  They don't want me to gain more than 20 lbs.  So far I'm up 11 lbs and have been right on track at all of my appts between the two of them and yet they still both bring it up every time. Luckily it really doesn't bother me that they are keeping such a close eye on my weight.  It should make pp weight loss a lot easier if I stay under the 20lbs guideline.
  • My OB mentioned it a lot when I was in first trimester I think because I was losing so much. When we got to 18 weeks, I had made it back to even and since then he hasn't said much of anything. I've gained 10 lbs since then and I guess that is fairly normal so there isn't much to talk about with that. Mainly he has been focused on my measurements these days.

  • No, but I want to ask her what she thinks.
  • I am always the one asking, I am overweight and trying not to gain over 15lbs, which I think I have hit already but they don't seem concerned. I always ask and they look and see what I've gained and say, oh ok yeah that number is fine.

  • None of the doctors I have seen in the practice I go to have said a word to me either. They always just tells me everything is right on schedule.
  • He said "you've been eating well" referring to the 5lbs I gained, and then measured my belly and I was measuring 4 weeks ahead and said "never mind I know where it all is"

  • Mine OB'll say "You've gained 4 lbs since we last saw you; which is good..." And leave it at that. She'll ask how I'm eating, but that's about it when it comes to my weight.

  • Mine never mentions it unless I bring it up. The only discussion we have about it is in relation to my nausea.
  • My OB never mentions my weight or anything else unless I ask.  She's very vague about everything.  I asked yesterday at my appointment if everything was ok as she was walking out, and she said, "Yep.  You're measuring right on track and the heart beat sounds good."  Sometimes I would like to know more, like the actual BPM of the heart beat, but I'm happy just knowing things are going well.

This! But I am gaining weight like a mofo and the baby is measuring small.... so I don't know. I think they only bring it up if you are gaining too much weight, for example even though I am gaining too much weight, I still don't weight as much as someone my height would weigh pre preg. So I guess if I gained so much weight that I'm overweight for a pregnant person my height, then they'd be concerned.

  • My midwife never mentions anything at all except to say that everything looks good. However one week she was out on vacation and I saw the OB at the practice and she did mention something, in fact she said, "just remember your baby isn't going to weigh 50lbs!" At that point I think I had gained about 15lbs so I was somewhat taken aback. Needless to say, I like my midwife much better!
  • My OB didn't say anything until I asked.  She said I was doing well but her weight gain expectations are a little more lenient than mine since I was a little overweight to begin with.  Still, she's happy so that makes me feel good.  Weight is such a poo issue. :(

  • At one of my first appointments with my OB she said that my weight gain looked good and told me how much I should gain throughout the whole pregnancy. Since then, one other time she said, "Weight looks good". I think she considers it and we'll talk about it if it's a problem. If it's not a problem there isn't really much to discuss.

  • My OBs (they do rotations in the office so right now I'm seeing 2 OBs and 1 midwife), only mention my weight if I ask any questions. I do notice that they look at the chart and tell me that everything looks fine.

  • Mine usually just says "your weight is right on."  but keep in mind she said this they month i gained nothing, and the month i gained 10 lbs....so i think it's just to keep me from freaking out.

  • Only when I ask about it.  The one time I asked she said I was right on track based on my pre-pregnancy weight.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

That's a little strange.  I'm all for not obsessing about weight gain, but it can be an indicator of a multitude of problems from both too little or too much.  I'm surprised they don't think its a good metric to track.

This. I just take it upon myself to clump all numbers together when she says this.

  • She doesn't, and I find it a little odd simply because I've already gained the high end of what she wanted for the whole pregnancy.  But I don't want to mention it for fear she'll say I have to really watch what I eat. Embarrassed
  • My OB always mentions my weight gain (how many lbs) and how good it is. I think only because I've had a lot of m/s problems and needed medication for it. My first pregnancy (same OB) he just told me everything is good.
