Nebulizer "tips"

We just got back from the drs. and LO has to start Albuterol treatments for a viral infection. (I took him in because his breathing was soooo shallow, his rib cage pulled in tight, and nostrils flared)

His first treatment we did at the docs and of course he cried.  Any momma's dealt with this? Any tips on when/how is the best way to give the treatment? Hopefully we will not have to do the treatments for long!

  • I am so sorry to hear about your lo. Our neb experience was with dd1 when she was two, so it was a bit different. We let her watch a tv (special treat for her) while she got the treatment. She sat still and only looked somewhat tortured. Destractions are good, what if you hold lo in a soothing fashion and sing/rock/rub back/legs etc?

Ooo Sesame street is a rare thing that he likes to watch. Dr said he should be upright or semi upright......... I was hoping to "sneak" a treatment while he was asleep. (because the machine is so quite..... lol) but since he has to be upright and the machine is loud that's not going to happen.

  • I don't put tv on for her but when I had to do her breathing treatments I would put barney on (from the on demand on cable) and sit pretty close to the tv and I'd sit her in my lap and hold the mask almost touching her face and I would sing along with the songs really animated! Sometimes that would work and sometimes I just had to craddle her and kinda hold her hands. She would cry but she had to have it! I stayed really calm and tried to soothe her the best I could! I felt really bad but she had to have it! Hope your LO gets better soon!
  • We gave him his bottle and the treatment at the same time with the bare nozzle/mask really close to his nose as he drank.

  • I know every child is different but when McCrae was on this, it made him HYPER, He didn't sleep well at all! When I talked to the Pedi she said to give it to him before 2pm. So I'm not sure how often you have to give him these breathing treatments, but maybe you want to keep that in mind =)
  • We've been on breathing treatments several times and I've always found for us it works best to sit Burke on the floor (with toys), facing me, and then I just hold the nebulizer close to his face and it just kind of blows at him.  I hope this makes sense.

  • I hold her in my lap and let her watch tv... sometimes she zones out and even falls asleep! This is coming from a bad sleeper too! :)
