Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Offering sippy cup vs. regular cup

My LO is about 7 months and I EBF. She has never taken a bottle, so I have been trying a sippy for the past month or so. She likes to bang it around and throw it on the floor, but not really drink from it. Should I try a cup instead of the sippy?

I am going back to work in a few months and want to make sure she is still drinking while I am away.

Re: Offering sippy cup vs. regular cup

  • I think playing with a sippy cup is normal. A cup would be fine, but probably 100x more messy.

  • We are experiencing the same thing with the sippy cup. He just plays with it. I just keep giving it to him and showing him how to drink from it.  I just keep hoping that one day he will figure it out.

  • what are you offering? breastmilk or juice?

and your LO has never ever taken a bottle like ever? why wouldn't you start there....seeing if she will take a bottle before a sippy?

  • keep offering it to her.

Bean did the banging thing for a while.  He still can't wrap his brain around the spillproof vents, so we remove those.  He drinks to his heart's content.

We offered the sippy in the high chair, in his carseat, in his walker, while playing on the floor, in shopping carts, in the stroller.  Everywhere.  He finally realized that his thirst could be quenched with this thingy!

But, we don't give him formula in it.  It seems like when he gets formula in his sippy, THAT's when he bangs it around again!

We actually started Preston on a regular cup (we obviously held it for him), but it got him used to the faster flow of liquid. We did this for months and then started with the sippy cup (with the stopper out of it). By then, he was more in control of his arms/hands and was able to drink from the sippy cup himself (but not until 10 months or so). Give it time, she will get there.

This is actually the opposite of what is recommended, especially at this age.

DD took a bottle for a few months before rejecting them for the breast.   We've been working on sippys...I would love to do the regular cup, but it's just so messy.

OP - I've taken the valve out of the Avent sippys and tipped it back quickly so that she could get some juice (we've been having some constipation issues).  She also does pretty well with the Nuby sippys.  The only problem is that she'd rather chew on them than suck!

  • We went straight to a cup. Sure, it's messier, but then we never have to get rid of the sippy! Lia does great with it and drinks quite a bit out of it.

  • Keep trying. We actually had the same issue with both kids. They hated the sippy cups so we just went straight to straw cups. So much easier for them. I would not recommend a regular drinking cup for a 7 month old. They will do the same thing as with the sippy but instead of the liquid staying it, it will get everywhere :)

Getting rid of a sippy isn't that hard since regular cups are almost identical to them in every way except the whole spout thing :) They still have to do the whole tilt back thing. Do you have to hold the cup for your DD?
