High-Risk Pregnancy

If you have Ulcerative Colitis...

Are you having a c-section? I was with my GI doc yesterday and he suggested that I have a c-section. He said it helps to preserve the inner and outer sphincter which is extremely important should I have to have an operation and a J pouch. I've been close to needing to do that before but managed to get it under control with Remicade.

Re: If you have Ulcerative Colitis...

  • I have Crohns and had two c/sections myself.  But the first was b/c DD was breech (so no choice there) but for DS I chose to have a c/s.  No one specifically told me that it wasn't a good idea to go vaginally but I've known lots of people (without IBD) that suffered major damage from a vag birth that I couldn't imagine risking it.  Especially if your GI dr is recommending it, I would do the c/s.

  • I have crohns but am planning on a vaginal birth.  I've been checking in with my GI doc regualary and he is really supportive of this.  The only time we even mentioned c-section was when we talked about flaring during pregnancy.  From what my GI and nurse midwives have said though, if your disease is under control there is no reason why you couldn't have a vaginal birth, lots of women with colitis/crohns have vaginal births without any complications at all.  Granted each person is different... Good luck in your decision!

  • I have Crohn's and my OB highly recommends a c/s because I have a history of fistulas.  I still have to see a GI surgeon to get his opinion on the matter.  Most likely my baby will be delivered via c/s.  I am also on Remicade treatments.  Are you still taking treatments while pregnant?  My doctor told me the risk of stopping the Remicade is higher than to keep on receiving the treatments.
  • Yes, I'm still taking the Remicade during the pregnancy. My Dr. also said the risk of stopping was higher than continuing. I can always tell the week before I'm due for an infusion so I can't imagine what it would be like to stop taking it. I am getting my last one at 29 weeks and if I don't flare they will give me an infusion while I'm in the hospital.
