Anyone have medela single deluxe pump?

I bought it for occassional use, I plan to SAH but wanted a pump for nights out or if I ever need to leave the baby for more than a few hours. When I got home, I checked the ratings and it only had 2/5 stars. Just wondering if anyone has experience? Is a hand-held breast pump a better investment?

Re: Anyone have medela single deluxe pump?

  • I bought it, but ended up taking it back before LO was born... I waited until after he was born to decide what I needed.  I ended up having to supplement in the beginning, so I had to rent a hospital grade pump for a month.  After using that sucker, there was no way I was going back to a single, so I asked for recs.  Everyone said to get the Medela PISA, so I finally sucked it up and bought it.  SO glad I did.

I am also a SAHM, but used it frequently for bottles the first month, not much for a while - and now I use it all.the.time!  Since he was six months, I've pumped in the mornings to have BM for his cereal twice a day, and then at night to give him a bottle before bed (he sleeps way longer if he takes a bottle before bed).

Before I bought the PISA, I thought it was a waste of money since I would be SAH, but I am SO GLAD I got it... I can't imagine how long I would have to be hooked up every day if I didn't have a double :)  Good luck with your decision!

  • Thanks so much for the great advice! I think I will keep it until after he's born to determine what I will need.

Did you ever have an issue with your LO taking a bottle vs breast or vice versa? What type of bottles do you use? I know all babies are different, but I have had a lot of people telling me that I may have issues trying to do both.

  • I don't know anything about that pump, but I'm a SAHM and have a Medela Swing.  It's probably more than I need, but I've been happy with it.  I really don't use it that often, so the Swing seemed like a good compromise for me.  I used it less than 10 times with DD (mostly for engorgement in the beginning) since she never once would take a bottle.  DS took a bottle for a few weeks and now he won't, either, so it's not getting much use this time around, either.  I've probably used it 15 times for DS since he was willing to take an occasional bottle for those few weeks.  I'm lazy and use water in his cereal, but really he isn't super into cereal and doesn't eat it that often.

Anyway, I don't know if I'm any help or not.  I can see how maybe I might use the pump more if I had a PISA, but I just wanted to give a different perspective since I really haven't ever wished I had a nicer pump.  In fact, sometimes I think the Swing is more than I really need.

  • We had to give him bottles starting at day 2 because he wouldn't nurse at all.  The first week he was super jaundiced and just wanted to sleep.  After the first week he started nursing like a champ, and had no problems switching back and forth between bottle and nursing.

At about 3 months, we stopped using any bottles for several weeks (we had a long distance move with 3 week road trip, and then were staying with my inlaws), and then when we tried again he wouldn't take ANY.  We worked on him for a while, and now he is back to taking bottles no problem.  We never had any of the "nipple confusion" - but I know some people do.

We mostly use Dr. Browns bottles, but also have used just the Medela bottles that come with the PISA (I am sure you can buy them separately too), and the Playtex drop-ins.

I think I just rambled on and basically didn't help at all - but really what I am saying is that it depends on you and your baby.  I could've definitely been fine with a single from months 2 thru 6, and month 1 I had the hospital pump anyways, but now I am happy with what I got... and I know it will last through baby #2 if we have one :)

  • Also, along those same lines, I didn't open any of the bottles that we got until after he was born - except one of the drop ins and one of the Dr. Browns.  We tried both, and then I decided on one and returned the others :)
