Pre-Regis. for L&D ward

I went to Patient Admin today to pick up the massive packet I need to pre-register for the OB unit. I'm 6 1/2 mo tomorrow, and I delivered my last DD at 37wks... so I figure if I turn it in around 30wks, that'll be plenty of time for the hospital to process it.

The guy at the desk told me that I didn't need to turn it in until 2 wks before my due date! Indifferent Wha... It's a NAVY Hospital!! If there's one thing Navy ANYTHING is a pro at, it's procrastination! I know if I haven't gone into labor by mid-Jan, if I don't have this thing turned in yet they'll be like, Oh, here it is... we haven't processed it yet... I'm getting ticked off thinking about it.

Regardless of his advice, I'll be turning it in BEFORE 38wks.

Has anyone else gotten their pre-reg package? I know I'll take long enough to fill it out right, so I'm not worried I got it a bit early.

Re: Pre-Regis. for L&D ward

  • My doctors office gave me my packet when I was like 16 weeks. They just told me to turn it in as soon as possible. I unfortunately have not turned it in yet due to that fact that I'm having a hard time choosing a pediatrician. Although that's the only line I have left to fill out.

  • Is your doctor supposed to give you all the info? I haven't gotten mine yet, maybe at my next appt (in a week).

  • I'm not sure if all doctors give you the information or not. I'm delivering at the hospital where my doctor is so they may just have the packets for that hospital. If your delivering at a different hospital than where your doctor is or if your doctor is not in a hospital, I would ask at your next appointment or call the hospital where you plan to deliver. It's not a huge thing, it's just information about the hospital and some forms for you to fill out so that checking into the hospital will be faster and easier.

  • Hmm, I'm with Sharp, delivering at Mary Birch, and I was given one form to be turned in asap.

All the men in my family are Navy, though, so I understand your surprise!

My pre-reg. package is all stuff that's YOU info: The first half is your name and SSN, and DH's name and info, and where he works, and insurance info (for us it's just Tricare, we don't have additional insurance), then papers on hospital regulations and needing your signature to allow them to do things if you're out, or if it's a teaching hospital, or you having a living will or something, and Next of Kin info in case they need it. The second half is all stuff you can only half fill out- baby's name and birth date, time of birth, parent's name (this is all for the birth cert) info about how long it'll take for a birth cert. to be available to be born, how long it'll take to process your baby into your insurance, how long it'll take for the baby's SSN card to come in the mail, etc.

I always leave 'Gender' and 'Name' blocks empty JUST IN CASE the 20wk u/s was wrong and we wind up having a boy. They only process the first half of the package for insurance and to make sure I know hospital policies. The 2nd half they'll give back to me after I deliver to finish filling out.

  • My Dr gave me mine at my first appointment and I sent it in once I hit 20 weeks. There's no harm in filling it out and sending it in as soon as possible. Why wait?
  • We had to fill out the standard patient admit form at our very first appointment in case something happened, so we didn't have to go through the ER but could go straight to L&D. However, we don't get the packet with the remaining forms until we do our hospital tour and meeting with the L&D coordinator at 32 weeks.

  • I agree, why wait- but the man at the desk made me feel like it was COMPLETELY unnecessary for me to fill it out this early! It makes ME feel better to turn it in 'early'!!

  • My OB gives the form the day you come in for your first appt. I hadn't pre-registered with Aidan and it didn't take very long. Granted I wasn't in labor so it didn't seem like it took forever.

  • I just did mine online in like 15 mins. and super proud of myself.  I was getting sick of seeing that item on my checklist.  I assume your Navy hospital does not do online pre-registration?  I am fortunate enough that I am too far from a military facility.

  • Yeah, Balboa is fab like that- no online pre-registration. I've also only seen my OB 3 times since being pregnant. In early Nov. is when I have my 4th appt with her, and my next one will be another 6wks later. Ugh!

  • I would do what you know is best (ie submit early), and keep a copy in case they lose it.

The midwife at my ob/gyn's office said not to preregister at our hospital, because all it does is result in an extra bill being sent to you.  I figure they know we're coming since we had to give our due date when we signed up for the tour.

  • Yeah I got mine in the mail a couple weeks ago.  I filled out some of it, like my name and address (like 20 times) but the rest was just too overwhelming.  Now it sits on my kitchen table, maybe I'll get the motivation to tackle it one of these days.

  • I was given my pre-registration packet at my very first appt when I was 4wks along. I sent it in within the month.
