talk to me about winter jackets...

Last winter was easy.  DD didn't use a winter jacket and stayed nice and cozy with the car seat cover.  This year she's still in an infant carrier (she's only 18.5 lbs), but there is no way she'll fit under a car seat cover.  She has a fall jacket that will work with the car seat, but with her big puffy winter jacket, her arms won't go through the straps.  Thoughts?

Re: talk to me about winter jackets...

  • Can you just do a warmer fleece or flannel sweater/coat, a hat and wrap a blanket around her (over the straps)?

I don't know that any actual coats would be acceptable in an infant carrier. But, the basic rule is that if you have to adjust the straps to fit the coat, the coat is too big.

I know there are carseat techs on here, and I'm sure they can help much more than I!

  • Last year Aiden had a great Columbian Fleece jacket that made worked great as it was warm & thin. This year we will be getting a new fleece jacket just like last year & I will be making him a "car seat poncho" out of fleece.
  • a fleece snowsuit/jacket and blankets.

We have a travel trench and love it, and it'll still fit her this year.

The test for a jacket/snowsuit is this:

    1. put jacket on baby

    2. strap baby into car seat and adjust the straps.

    3. take baby out WITHOUT loosening the harness.

    4. take jacket off and strap baby back into seat.

if you have to adjust the straps to get a proper fit, it's too big.

  • In the infant seat, we did a fleece or a warm sweatshirt (not too thick).  Then we put a warm blanket over the top if we were carrying him.
