Vit D and the Sun (mini rant)

You do NOT get Vitamin D from the sun... The suns rays do not contain it, and it is NOT absorbed through your skin.  You get Vitamin D through food and Multi-vitamins.  The problem is that most of it is not in the correct form.  The UV rays in sunlight can make this conversion.  It is INCORRECT to say that you get Vitamin D from the Sun!  (sorry, just saw a Boniva commerical and this is one of my huge pet peeves!)

  • Is WebMD wrong?

"D is also the only vitamin that does not need to be consumed in food or supplements because our bodies are efficient at making it when our skin is exposed to direct sunlight (not through a window)....'Sunlight is the easiest, it's free, and your body is very efficient at making vitamin D from the sun, and it lasts twice as long as other sources,' says Holick."

It was always my understanding that you MAKE Vitamin D due to the sun's UVB rays, regardless of what you consume.

I am also wondering about this. I've been told by more than one doc that food and vitamins alone are not enough and that I should get about 15min a day of direct sun light so that the body can get and produce as much vit D as possible....

Unfortunately, you may have a hard time with that in MN. ;)   I used to live in Florida so I am missing the sun big time!

  • It's not found *in* sunlight, your body makes it in response to sunlight. Scientists aren't sure whether or not dietary supplements really help.

  • Sunlight converts it... it has to already physically be in your body.  WebMD isn't wrong per se, because the sunlight is "making it" by converting what is already there.  I don't know why it says that you don't have to consume it... that's wrong... but it's in A LOT of things... so it isn't one you have to really worry about.  And the reason you can't get it through a window is because UV is reflected by glass so it doesn't make it to your skin.

  • Actually sunlight converts 7-dehydrocholesterol, a cholesterol precursor, into vit d. It's found in the body regardless of diet.

  • I'll jump in with my nutrition background...

Vitamin D is not a well understood by most people, particularly because of the milk industry and supplement companies (make you think you can only get it that way) as well as the of American cancer society (i.e. recommendation for sunscreen which impairs vitamin D synthesis) and on top of where you live (higher latitudes and you can't actually get synthesis from the sun half the year.

anyway, here is a great link... they scientist (Bruce Hollis) is a renowned expert in the field.  I've heard him speak and he's great.   Bottom line is most people don't get enough....

I wasn't sure what the actual precursor was, thanks.  I'm happy as long as people don't think it's being transported through your skin from the rays Smile
