2nd Trimester

My new OB is a poopface

So I am at a new practice from the last time I was pregnant (new hospital too).  There are three Dr.s in the practice.  Well last week, at my normal check up we saw a doctor we hadnt seen yet (only had seen one yet so far) She was reiterating all of the things i should cut down on and avoid during pregnancy etc

Then she starts talking about coffee, and she says that coffee from home is ok, but coffee from dunkin or starbucks is off limits since they use alot more caffiene than anyone else

dude.  its pumpkin spice latte season, why on earth would you strip me of that... if she didnt say that with DH there i may have left out that little tidbit.  I had starbucks every once in a while during the last pregnacny and my baby was fine.  But DH is a sticlker for pregnancy rules... grrrrr I will have to find a way to sneak myself at least ONE pumpkin spice latte this fall!!!

  • Poopface is right! I'd be sneaking my latte in during those solo visits to the grocery store. Big Smile
  • hmmm - I have issues with the reasoning on this one.  A tall Pumpkin Spice Latte has 75mg of caffeine.

It says so right here: https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/espresso/pumpkin-spice-latte?foodZone=9999#size=183886&milk=63&whip=125

March of Dimes says that pregnant women should limit their coffee intake to 200mg per day or less.

That said, the OB may have his/her reasons.

  • I don't think they have all that much caffeine in them, but if you wanted, you can get the lattes decaf. I get pumpkin spice lattes frequently from Starbucks, sometimes decaf, sometimes not.

75mg is less than 200mg.... so if i have one Latte, i will be ok...

  • So order a half-caff.

  • I just do decaf.  But that's because I know I'm getting caffeine from other sources throughout the day, like my cup of morning coffee, iced tea, chocolate, etc.  I can definitely tell and feel a difference between the espresso used in a SB latte and coffee from home.  And my beloved DD coffee is like liquid crack, so I tend to agree with her on that one.

  • I am counting pennies so the Bucks had to go but I found out International delights has a pumpkin spice latte creamer. Its not as good as Starbuck's but it curbs the craving. Still the Dr's reasoning is BS

  • It's actually the drip coffee from Starbucks that has tons of caffeine not the espresso used in lattes.  A Grande drip coffee from Starbucks has much more than 200mg of caffeine but a latte has much less so you're safe with an occasional pumpkin spice latte.

Just order a decafe or a half caff if you're worried about it.

  • There is a Circle K right by my office and they have caffiene-free cappucchino's.  Right now they have carmel, french vanilla and pumpking spice.  I think they are really good.

Also, I do not really watch my caffiene intake.  I just happen to really like these!

  • A tall pumpkin spice latte only has 75 mg. of caffeine, so you are MORE than safe with one! My friend's Midwife said up to 300 mg of caffeine is ok, and her baby was PERFECT.
