Hi- I'm self employed and trying to conceive and just read that you should try to get a private disability policy before pregnancy. Has anyone done this or could you recommend a company/policy to contact that is good? Any info on this topic is very appreciated, thanks!

Life is good!
Aflac usually only offers to groups through your employer, but you don't need a large amount of people to be a "group," so if you have other employees it might be worth calling them. Also, if you belong to a professional organization, you might be able to get it from them.
FWIW, I pay $80/mo for 60% coverage for up to 8 weeks post partum through Aflac, so it's not too bad and worth it, IMO. Especially since it covers all sorts of other unexpected disabilities too. If you contribute significantly to your household, it's probably important to look into this.
thanks!
i just called aflac and they have a hospitalization policy (supplemental since i'm also on my husband's health insur) that covers $500/day for up to 5 days + more for surgery, but they don't have disability i think unless you have 3 or more employees. That hospital coverage sounds good but it needs to be at least 2 months before conception and I was hoping to conceive this month
so not sure if i can get it now...
@ shouldbworking -- is your policy with aflac?
I have the AFLAC hospital indemnity policy and the agent told me "no sex for 30 days" (real professional I know) so basically their rule is you're not eligible for reimbursement if you have a baby within 10 months of purchasing your policy. It may vary from state to state.
I would definitely recommend talking to an agent about your options. I ended up purchasing 2 policies, and assuming I have a normal birth and hospital stay, I will collect up to $5K in insurance after I deliver. I pay $60 per month for the policies - totally worth it!
I researched it up down and sideways because clearly AFLAC will lose money on me, but my agent said that these policies bring in a ton of new customers, many of whom end up keeping their polices or buying more insurance from them. The only bummer is that you have to give birth in a hospital so if you're interested in a home birth or free standing birth center they will not reimburse you. Good luck!
Yes, my policy is thru Aflac. I had to wait 10 mos from the date it started to claim a PG.
