Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Here's a story for ya (warning - sad)...

So we took DS to get his 2nd flu shot this morning and while we were in the waiting room there was a little girl (around 7 years old if I were to guess) and her grandma reading a kids book.  The grandma's cell phone rang and she answered - she said something like, "Oh my goodness, is she ok?  Well what happened?  Ok we'll go straight to the hospital when we leave the doctor's office."  Then she hung up.

The little girl seemed scared and asked, "What happened grandma?  Did daddy hurt mommy again?  Did he hit her bad this time?"

My face must have looked like this:  Indifferent

The grandma tried to hush the girl up quickly and said, "Oh no, nothing like that.  She just fell down and broke her leg.  She'll be fine."

Again Indifferent

Then they got called in to see the doctor and as soon as the door shut I turned to DH and said, "did you hear that too?"  He nodded and then shook his head in disbelief.  It's so sad that women are abused by their husbands and their children are well aware of the situation.  Crying

  • What kills me the most is that this has clearly happened in front of this little girl. So sad.

This... how sad.  The poor wife, the poor little girl...

  • Oh no.... how terrible!
  • Did you think about telling the pedi? I'm not 100% sure on their responsibilities when the abused party is an adult, but I'm sure that CPS doesn't like children remaining in homes with such obvious abuse.
  • That's just horrible.

It didn't even cross my mind at the time.

There's no statute of limitations for the time you remain in the office---you can still contact the pedi confidentially and share your concerns for his/her patient.

  • This is so sad.

Kids are more aware than some will give credit for, and they are honest in their thoughts...notice the grandma hushing the child who is honest and truthful about what happens.

Please call the pedi and let him/her know.  They are a mandated reporter and will know what to do.

OMG this.  How sad.  And I don't know why it makes me mad...but obviously the grandmother (I'm guessing a capable adult) seems pretty well informed of the situation and is playing along with this charade?!  She must be the father's mother. Makes me want to puke.

  • That is horrible Sad I agree with PP that you should call back to the pedi office and speak to the office manager about it. I am sure that if you give them a description of the girl and her grandmother and the approximate time you were there they can look up the records and get her name and report what happened.

I asked my MIL if I should call and she seems to think they can't/won't do anything since it will be considered "here say".  It's not even coming from the little girl - it's coming from me - someone who heard the little girl say it.  And since the person being abused is the mom - not the little girl...they won't be able to do anything about it.

  • Call anyways. They might be able to document it even if they can't do anything about it. Dad may also be abusing the little girl.

OK I did it.  I just called and told them what I heard.  She didn't ask any questions, she just said, "OK we'll do our best. Thanks".  Then I told her what time we were in and she said, "Yeah, I remember."  So maybe they are already aware of the situation?  IDK but at least I called and now it's on them.  I can sleep tonight.
