Minnesota Babies

Pregnant and new to MN!!!

Hello!

My husband and I just moved to Minnesota, and unexpectedly, just discovered we are pregnant!  We are very excited, but do not have a strong support system here.  I am desperately in need of some great OBGYN referrals/recs.  I have been doing some research, and I have read a lot of positive information on Southdale OBGYN.  This feels ideal to me, considering that it is less than 5 minutes from our home.  Do any of you have experience there?  Any other recs?  Please help!

 Thanks!!!

  • I love Southdale OBGYN. I have seen many of the doctors

  • Did you see multiple doctors there over the course of your pregnancy?  How did you feel about that?
  • I don't have any OB advice for you...I saw/see the midwife team at HealthPartners St. Paul (their great if that would work for you)...

I just wanted to say welcome and congrats! We got married in 9/07, bought our first house in 12/07 and found out we were unexpectedly pregnant in 4/08...it was A LOT to take in, and very overwhelming, but it was all perfect in the end!

yes it was thru the course of my pregnancy, I did this so I could meet all the doctors as I didn't know if I would Deliver on my Due date or not & you never know who is on- call. It as a good thing to as the doctor I wanted to have was unable to do it & I had to have the on call doctor do it, (I only wanted the one doctor as he was the one who delivered me when I was born & thought it would be really cool to have him deliver Aiden)

  • Well, I just scheduled an appointment, but they said they don't schedule initial appts until 8-10 weeks.  Is this normal?  I feel like I have a million questions.  Also, she said I could begin taking pre-natal vitamins, but any specific brand?  I feel lost, ha.

  • It's normal in most practices not to be seen until 8-10 weeks...unless you've had a previous high risk pregnancy, or some health issue that would warrant an earlier visit.

I've always just taken the Target Brand prenatal vitamins. When I first got pregnant, they told me to just get any OTC prenatals.

A lot of people get nauseous/sick from prenatals. I always took mine with a big glass of water right before bed, and never had any issues. It's best to do that, or take it with food.

  • Welcome!

Can't really help you with any OBGYN recs, but DH and I can relate to the freshly moved and pregnant. We moved here in May 09 from CA and found out we were pregnant in June 09. I can totally relate to feeling a bit lost! But you'll love it here!

  • I went to Southdale and liked it but LOVED my doctor there.  He then went to Fairview Southdale and I followed him there.  His name is Dr Thomas Noonan.  VERY personable.  If I didn't live so far away now I would still see him.  I highly recommend him.

In response to your posting about the 8-10 week appt....it is normal.  I think I felt the same when I heard that they make you wait so long.  GL!!

    Welcome to MN!

As PP have said, yes it is normal to not be seen until that time.  It's a cruel wait but normal!  ;)  I also agree with PP about the suggestion about Target pre-natals.  I take the pack with a separate DHA pill, and I also take them at night to help with getting sick to my stomach.  Good luck with everything, do you know how far along you are?

  • I also went through Southdale OB.  One thing to keep in mind is they are a team of doctors, and at the time of delivery you will get one of the two doctors on call, so you never really have your "own" doctor.  I tried to set up my appointments with all the different doctors and I really liked them all.  You also have the option at delivering at one of two hospitals (I recommend Fairview Southdale).  Good luck!
  • Hi there-

I go to the John Haugen Associates in Minneapolis, but they also have an office in Edina. Their doctors go between both offices and deliver at Abbott Northwestern and Fairview Southdale. I absolutely love them. My Dr is Andrea Flom. If she is ever unavailable I see the nurse practioner, Jancy-who is equally fabulous. I know you have your appt set up, but this can be a back up option for you.

I also have been taking Target brand prenatals and haven't had issues with them-but I always take them with food and water.

Welcome to MN and congrats on the baby news! Very exciting time for you and the hubs.

  • Welcome to Minnesota and congratulations!  I go to Southdale OBGYN.  I also had my first appointment at 8 weeks.  They offered a class that I went to and they answered a lot of my questions there and I met other people due around the same time which was nice.  I then took a class with my husband later in my pregnancy and it had some of the same people in it.  We are planning a "reunion" once we all have our babies in the next month so I thouhgt that was really neat.

I have seen most of the doctors (Ijust schedule the time that wokrs best for me with whatever dr is available) and have liked them all.  I use the Target brand prenatals.

  • Thanks so much for the info!  It's so nice to hear that your experience has been so positive.  It just feels weird to attend this pre-natal class when I haven't confirmed the preganancy with the doctor!  I mean, I've taken two pregnancy tests that showed up positive...and now I just wait?  It just makes me nervous.

  • I'm a little late to this post but I also wanted to welcome you to MN!

I also go to Southdale and like it. I thought the class they suggest you attend before your first appointment is really helpful. I'd suggest going if this is your first.

    Good luck :)

  • Welcome to MN!

I go to the Paul Larson OBGYN clinic (in the Southdale Medical Building - right across from the hospital), and I see Dr. Hirt.  Love him, love the clinic.  My delivery at Fairview Southdale was great, too.

    Good luck!
