How long do you let a fever run its course?

DS had a cough for about a week or so but it was nothing major. Now he is coughing a lot more and seems congested, and he has had a temp of 101-102 for the last two days.

I feel like sometimes I jump the gun with calling the pedi, I take him in and they tell me it's a virus and I have to let it run its course. I'm just never sure on how long to wait, because he is kind of prone to ear infections as well so I hate to let it go.

Also I had mono about a month ago and I'm concerned he might have that. If that's the case, I guess it doesn't really matter because there is no medication for that either.

How long do you wait before calling the doc?

  • Does the fever respond to acetaminopen/ibuprofen?  Is it a cough b/c of post nasal drip or does it sound like a chest cough?  My initial thought is that it sounds like he's getting worse, not better so I'd probably call to be on the safe side.  If you're not using it already, saline nasal spray is great for nasal congestion and helps get the gunk out of their sinuses!  FWIW - DS1 is prone to sinus infections and he usually needs antibiotics to treat those.

  • I would go now. With a virus my ds tends to run a very high (104-105) fever. Lower fevers in him tend to indicate ear infections or strep.

  • I would guess the cough developed into something else and he should go in.

This. And I'm normally an anti-alarmist when it comes to colds and fevers, but it sounds like the drainage might be causing an ear infection or upper respitory infection. I'd call.
