I am hoping someone on here can help me out. I have also posted on the Breastfeeding Board. I have an almost 11 month old who has not been nursing regularly since Friday. She used to nurse every 2 hours (on the dot!) from 7 am to 7 pm, then sleep through the night. She has been doing this since about 5 months old.
On Friday morning she bit me, and I yelled out in pain. She wouldn't nurse for the rest of that day, and since then has been inconsistent with nursing. A few times she has nursed when she first woke up in the morning, and a few times right before bed, however now she hasn't nursed at all since yesterday morning when she woke up.
She is willing to take BM in a bottle, as well as from a cup with a straw, but not from me. I have been pumping a much as possible to keep the milk coming, but I'm not sure what else to do. I try to nurse her about every 2 hours, but she arches her back and screams.
Does anyone have any suggestions? She has a severe dairy allergy, so I really want to keep nursing her for at least a few more months.
Re: XP - BFing help needed
If you think she was just startled when you yelled and now associates nursing with that scary feeling, try doing some quiet mommy-baby time with your shirt off. Hold her, nap with her in your bed (if you're okay with that), or just let her nap next to you. Basically, the point is to reconnect and let her spend lots of time next to the breast so that she will want it again. It's the same advice you'll find if LO is on a nursing strike for a variety of reasons.
Just keep offering, but try not to add to her stress or anxiety. And try to relax yourself. She may be picking up on your stress about the situation. If she doesn't want it, let her get down and do something else. If you really want to get her back on the boob, maybe don't offer it so quickly in a sippy or bottle. Make her come back to you if she wants milk.
Hopefully it's just a phase that you have to work through, but with my daughter once she bit- that was her way of letting me know she was done BFing. It was shortly after her first birthday, and we were only nursing in the morning and at bedtime. She bit me during the morning nursing, and that was it, no more nursing in the morning. About a week later she bit me during the bedtime nursing and she was done for good. I tried for a couple of days, but she made it obvious that wasn't interested anymore.
