Potty Training

Advice on Getting Started

I would be so appreciative of any suggestions...My LO is 21 months old, he understands that we peepee and poopoo in the potty. He tells me regularly AFTER he has pooped, which I praise him for. He does not wake up with a dry diaper, etc. so we are not ready for 3day pt and I am not going to push it. However, how do I help him make the leap from telling me AFTER he goes to telling me he has to go? Also, how do I handle tinkle? He has never told me he needs to pee. I have tried a few times to stick him on the potty before bath time as a friend suggested to see if he just might go, but no interest. Thanks for any suggestions. We will possibly do 3daypt after he is 2, but I think it would be nice going into it to have had some successes on the potty.

Re: Advice on Getting Started

  • My DD is day time PTed and still doesn't wake up with a dry diaper. I wouldn't use that as a gage for readiness even though the 3D method says so. My DD was in the same place as your son when we started (told me when she pooped/had no idea about her pee) and trained pretty easily right after she turned 2. If you want to do anything before officially PTing, putting him on the potty to see if you'll "catch a pee" is a good advice. It gets him used to the potty and a chance for you to praise him if anything happens.

  • For both of my kids we started just putting them on the potty at 2 yo.  Didn't even try before then.  They both have late May bdays so we did this through the summer and they had progressively more success.  At first it was just getting them to sit on the potty.  We had the most success right after dinner before nap and when we first started we only did this once a day to introduce the process.  When they did start peeing we would make a huge deal out of it, do a potty dance and give them a treat like M&M's or a jelly bean.  In the fall they both seemed to get it and would ask to go to the potty.  Pooping was last for both of them, my daughter took a bit longer for that.  They were both daytime pt'd by 2y5mo and this gradual process worked for us.  Neither of them used pull ups.  They went to daycare on a Friday in a diaper and the next Monday in undies.

As I said for my daugter she had an issue with pooping but got over this over the course of the last month.  She was a good twice a day pooper, once in the morning and when she got home from daycare.  Once we were full force pt'ing her diaper would be pee dry all day, but she would withhold poop or go during naps, which really sucked for a few weekend because she usually naps 2-3 hours still!  For her we promised her a prize and kept talking to her about pooping on the potty.  The first few times she did it I swear it was an accident but it made it less scary for her.  This weekend we are heading to the tpy store so she can pick out a new baby!

Nighttime pt'ing happened for my son at about 2y9mo.  He is like my husband and has to go a lot.  As soon as he started nighttime pt'ing he was getting up a lot at night even if we cut his liquids etc.  He NEVER got out of bed before that so it's been a total PITA for us!  My daughter seems to be able to hold it longer like me so hopefully she will have an easier time with this!

Good Luck!  I would go with the gradual approach.  They will get used to the potty and will learn to tell you.  Incedentally my friends that used pull ups have kids in them forever.  I'm not sure why, but we just never needed pull ups....
