So now that we're finally serious about TTC, I'm having crazy cycles (only 3 weeks long) and I suspect I'm not ovulating given the CBEFM not giving me any peaks at all the past 3 cycles.
My ob just mentioned the possibility of Clomid next cycle, and I won't lie, it freaks me out. I don't think I'm mentally prepared for the thought of multiples (I'm sure I'm being irrational here, just bear with me). How common are multiples? What are other risks/concerns with it?
I haven't done any research yet because I don't want to freak myself out on Google, so figured I'd come here first.
Thanks!
Re: Clomid experts - questions
I'm no expert, but I remember my doc saying the risks really aren't that high - I just googled and found this:
https://www.sharedjourney.com/define/clomid.html
Although Clomid can increase the chances of conceiving multiples compared to the general population, many agree that this increase is not significant.
and it's even lower with femara - has your doc mentioned femara as a possibility? if not, you might want to ask. someone also posted a free 30-day supply coupon awhile back that I was able to use so it should save you some $$ as well - just google to get the link.
trust me though, I was VERY happy to see that one baby last week! especially since I had 3 eggs that had looked pretty good at my previous check up.
I'm no clomid expert, but the boys are here because of it.
I had the exact same reaction when my doc said the word "clomid" to me at my gyno appointment. I went in just to see what was going on with my body and left completely freaked out that I might need infertility drugs of any kind, even though Clomid is a baby step in the whole world of IF. It's normal.
My doc told me the chance of multiples was 7%, but I've heard it as high as 10%. I'd suggest you go to a doc who will monitor your follies in the process if you're worried about multiples. My doc did not. I also foolishly thought 7% was pretty low so wasn't that worried about it. Ha! Joke's on me!
As for side effects, I was warned about hot flashes, moodiness, nausea, etc, etc. Didn't have anything like that. Everyone seems to have different reactions to it, and you won't know yours until you try.
Good luck! And keep an eye on those follies!
i don't know much about clomid, but i do know that is how my sister ended up with twins.
i hope you get some answers soon.
good luck!!!
I took Femara for 5 cycles and on it I always had at least 2 follicles. It didn't work for me unfortunately so I can't speak to the multiples issue. My side effects were hot flashes everyonce in a while during the night and moodiness. I'm surprised he didn't start sleeping on the couch just to get away from my cranky @ss! I have also heard that Femara has less side effects than Clomid.
Good luck with your decision.
the 10 percent chance for twins is number is the one I've always gotten-- the likilihood of triplets or more was less than 3 percent. But for sure get the follies monitored-- I usually only had one dominant-- 2 maybe once or twice.
Married October 28, 2006, TTC since March 2009 IUI #1-8 w/ clomid = BFN
IVF # 1 May, 2011 = BFP!!! Stillbirth at 26 weeks (placental failure/severe IUGR)
FET #1 February, 2012-- BFP! Beta #1=84 Beta #2= 207 Beta #3= 3,526
Our Rainbow Baby is on the Way!
I would also suggest being monitored. I wasn't for my Clomid cycles. I really didn't know anyone back then who could give me advice and didn't know what I was doing. My OB did them without ultrasounds to check for follies. I am a horrible responder and only produced one mature follie during my injects cycle, so I'm guessing I only had one on Clomid. Still, even though the chances are really low there are some HOMs out there from Clomid cycles so if I had it to do over again I would have insisted on being monitored or just waited until I saw the RE if my OB wouldn't do it.
I did have really bad side effects from Clomid. I was not a very nice person at all. I have also heard that Femara has less side effects.

I agree with being monitored and seeing and RE - they have so much more experience with fertility drugs than a regular OB/GYN.
My RE told me the risk of twins is 10%, and the risk of triplets or more is less than 1%. It also depends on how you take clomid - usually it is prescribed on CDs 3-8 or CDs 5-9. The earlier in the cycle you take it, the more follies. The later in the cycle you take it, the better quality follies. I took clomid for four cycles and did it both ways and only had one follicle when I started on CD 5, and I had two when I started on CD 3. I got PG the cycle I had two follies, but only one took.
