What do your kids eat at DC?

We have been giving DS soft things from our dinner for a while now and he loves it. He eats like a champ. I told DC that we're ready for Brock to start trying table food there so they gave me a menu. I was kind of surprised. It never crossed my mind when looking at daycares to look at the menu. I guess I forgot he would eat real food at some point. They serve pizza, corn dogs, mac & cheese, ziti, fish sticks, chiken nuggets, ect. It is served with a fruit and veggie but most of that seems like crap. Is that what kids eat? I think I'm just going to let them give him the fruits and veggies that come with the lunch for now and the toast or pankcakes for breakfast and see how he does with that.

Also, can someone please remind me what the rule is on eggs? Is it no eggs before 1?

  • eh, it's kid food....not the best but they are probably facing a lot of picky eaters, like mine. They do make the stuff mostly from scratch at my place, but it's still 'kid' food.

They can have yolks anytime, no whites until after 1.

  • My center has a great menu.  I was pleased it wasn't ful of typical "kid" food, and in fact their menu gives me lots of ideas for things to serve at home!  They do a lot of soups (messy, but DD loves soup), pastas, and even dishes I would never think to serve kids like chicken curry.  Surprisingly, DD loves a lot of the ones I think she wouldn't eat, and even if she doesn't like it I'm glad she's getting some variety.

I think this is the exception, though, and most centers offer more kid cuisine.

Fish sticks and chicken nuggets have snuck on more than they used to be, but not so much that it bothers me

  • DD has breakfast at home and we pack her a lunch. We have the option of ordering the local public school district lunch, which is delivered to the center. We haven't tried that yet b/c it's pretty much what you described--chicken nuggets, pizza, etc. The center supplies a morning snack and parents rotate bringing afternoon snack.

  • Chicken, rice, noodles, carrots, zucchini, soy nut butter on toast and fruit are the staples.  Really simple, basic, wholesome.

No egg whites until a year or so, but egg yolks are OK sooner.

  • Ours is okay.  Sloppy joes and chicken nuggets once in a while, but also things like chili, grilled cheese and tomato soup.  Sometimes his lunch sounds way better than mine.  It's the snacks that get me.  Sometimes they're okay (veggies and dip, crackers and cheese) but they're muffins or things like that a bit more often than I'd like.

  • I wish our daycare served healthier food, it's probably one of my biggest complaints. They do try to healthier options, like turkey hot dogs cut up with pasta, trader joes chicken tenders, etc. I also make requests where I can, like no syrup or butter on his waffles. I think they would actually like to do healthier food, but some of the kids are really picky so they end up modifying.

I wish I had time to pack his food, but considering he eats breakfast, lunch, and 2 snacks there, that's really a lot more than I can realistically do right now. Plus the food is included in the price. He's a great eater too, so I try not to worry too much.

  • We have to send a lunch.

It must include a protein, fruit / veggie, and a carb or the parents get a note home.

They provide 1% white milk, unless there's a noted milk allergy, in which case the parents are to send a beverage.
