Austin Babies

how long would you wait to take DC out?

We're going to a halloween party Friday (family party) and taking DD. I've been reading more and more on pertusis and am now worried about taking her anywhere (6 weeks old). Granted, in the article I just read the baby hadn't been out at all and still got whooping cough. Should I avoid taking her anywhere (we're going to Target tomorrow), and this Halloween party??

Re: how long would you wait to take DC out?

  • I waited about 2 or 3 weeks before taking the baby out.  I think 6 weeks would be fine.  You don't have to let everyone hold her and you can ask people to please wash their hands before they do.

  • I would take her but keep her in a front carrier or her car seat most of the time.  I might let a select few hold her but would bring hand sanitizer for them to use first.
  • I would totally bring her.  We took Kate out to eat at 3 weeks.  At 6 weeks we had her baptized and then had a huge party.

  • we took him out at 2 weeks, just covered his carseat and didn't let anyone touch/ breathe on him.
  • We started going out and about at 6 week. I think that was our first NB GTG. Do you have a wrap like a Moby? That keeps the babies more hidden/tucked away than other carriers like the Bjorn, so people can peek in at her but aren't likely to try and touch her. You can borrow ours if you think it would help--I'm happy to come by and show you how to use it! Otherwise, ditto suggestions about just keeping her covered with a blanket in the carseat or otherwise away from the entire crowd thinking it's time to pass around the baby. And lots of hand sanitizer!
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • We took him out at 3 days to go clothes shopping, and he had his first park playdate at 2 weeks.  He went on four flights at 17 days/23 days.  I didn't worry too much about taking him out of the house.   You can put a blanket over the carrier to keep people from getting too close, or wear the baby which provides a lot of distance between others and the baby - you can use your own body to block intrusive people from getting too close.
  • Isn't it RSV season?  I took my boys out around 6 weeks for the first time, but I kept them covered up and it wasn't cold out or RSV season.  I'm a nervous nelly though and my boys were teeny when we left the hospital (5+ pounds each).
  • You can take her out, but be STRICT about no touching or holding by others unless they do proper handwashing. No "soap, rinse, done". No like, "I'm about to go into surgery" handwashing. Make sure to wash YOUR hands before feeding, touching or changing baby. Even if you feel like you "haven't touched anything".
