Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Vitamin Drops Question

So I know I'm supposed to be giving my EBF baby these supplemental vitamin drops for D, but I've tried to administer them a couple of times and he ends up spitting it out--- so I tried it--- it tastes HORRIBLE. And the taste wouldn't leave fir half the day. Is there either another brand that doesn't taste like metal, (I have enfamil) or another way to get D into him? Ug.

Re: Vitamin Drops Question

  • I put it in a little water with a tiny bit of formula.  He sucks it right down. Otherwise I EBF when I'm at home.

  • We use Tri-VI-Sol and it smells like cherry licorice (not sure if that's the same one you're talking about)... but DD loves it!

I didn't give them with DD and my pedi hasn't even mentioned them for DS.

  • My DS is FF but I give him Vitamin D drops.  It's helps to build his immune system.  I got some at my local health food store and I put a drop on his paci and he sucks it.

  • We started with poly-vi-sol and they were absolutely hideous!!! He gagged and spit it out and even puked so we switched to just the D-vi-sol and he takes that so much better. It smells so much better too.
  • Thanks guys--- yeah the tri vi sol is what I have... I'll probably just end up throwing it out... What a waste! Maybe the other cherry stuff will work? I think he'll be fine so far but I suppose I should get the vitamins into him for his development...

  • Baby D Drops by Carlson Labs. It's a tiny tasteless drop that contains 400 units vit d, same as poly and tri vi sol. One bottle contains 365 doses.

I can't read your link bc I'm on my phone, but the 2008 american academy of peds recs 400 units from birth for all Bf infants and those taking less than 1L formula per day. I'd be concerned your pedi isn't following that.

This is what we have and LO hasn't noticed them yet.  I put a drop on my nipple then BF.

  • My son didn't like the vit D drops at first, but now he takes them without any problems.  I give it to him in the morning after the first nursing session after I change him on the changing table.  I think it just took him awhile to get used to it.

Did you accidentally get Tri Vi Sol with Iron? I've made that mistake. The iron tastes awful. Regular Tri vi sol and the plain D drops both taste pretty good to me.

  • I use the tri-vi-sol, too.  Sometimes she'll take them with no problem, other days it's a war.  I always nurse her afterwards to calm her down and get rid of the taste.

I'm not concerned.  BM and formula has everything babies need for the first year.  Around 12 months I did give my DD a vitamin drop but nothing before that.  I don't plan on doing vitamins until 12 months with DS either.
